He Called It Fair Chapter 01
Ever since I married Christopher Waldorf a year ago, I'd spent several days each month drifting in and out of a senseless stupor.
After consulting every top doctor in the city, Christopher finally learned it was caused by neurasthenia. So he bought me all kinds of expensive herbal medicine and even prepared it himself.
Then, one day, I overheard him talking to a friend. "Chris, if you keep drugging Tati like this, aren't you worried she'll actually lose her mind?
"That's not even the worst part. You actually sent her to another guy while she was out cold. That's sick."
Christopher pulled his secretary, Lucille Kirk, closer, his fingers sliding between her legs. "What choice do I have? I need a few days every month to relax.
"I'm in another woman's bed, and she's in another man's bed. That's fair, isn't it?
"I don't owe her anything!"
***
He didn't owe me anything? How dare he say that?
His words hit me like a blow. My head throbbed, my heart raced, and I could barely breathe.
Could it be...that my unconsciousness every month wasn't caused by some illness, but by Christopher?
Then what exactly had I gone through during those days?
I wanted to keep listening, but the door suddenly opened from the inside.
"Tati, why are you just standing there? Why aren't you coming in?"
The private room was dimly lit, yet I could still see Lucille sitting on Christopher's lap, her skirt hiked up to her waist.
The moment he saw me, Christopher shoved Lucille aside and walked over, reaching for my hand.
"Why didn't you tell me you were coming? I would've picked you up."
I quietly pulled my hand behind my back and stared straight at Lucille. "What is she doing here?"
Before Christopher could answer, Lucille snapped, "I'm Mr. Waldorf's personal secretary. Wherever he goes, I go. That's my job."
I slapped her across the face. "Does being a personal secretary mean you get to sit on your boss's lap?"
She clearly hadn't expected that. Tears welled up instantly as she turned to Christopher with a pitiful expression.
"Mr. Waldorf, look at my face. Mrs. Waldorf has no manners at all."
Christopher didn't even glance at her. He simply smiled at me. "What's the matter? Feeling grumpy?"
I slapped him just as hard. "How could I possibly be in a good mood when I see another woman sitting on your lap?
"Christopher, do you just not care, or am I just overthinking everything?"
Something flickered in his eyes and vanished in an instant, but I still caught it.
After fifteen years, I could read his every move like an open book.
Even after being slapped, he didn't get angry. Instead, he took my hand and pressed it against his face.
"Are you jealous? You little jealous thing. It was just a bit of fun. Why take it so seriously?
"Look, a little flirting and touching is expected here—every man does it. But I swear, I've never taken it any further than that.
"Honey, as long as my heart belongs to you and I come home every night, you should never suspect me of cheating."
I couldn't even stomach another look at him, so I turned and walked out.
He hurried up and draped his coat around me to shield me from the cold wind.
"You're not in great health. Don't catch a cold."
When we got home, he pulled me into his arms. "It's the 15th today. Based on your pattern these past few months, you're about to have another episode.
"I'll go make your medicine. If you take them now, maybe it won't hit you this month."
