No Longer Yours To Claim Me Chapter 01
Exactly one year after mating with Casper—I stood alone in the county clerk's office, waiting for him to show up and make our bond official.
The county clerk's office clock chimed three times.
The screen above the counter flashed red—my number, crumpled in my palm, had been skipped. Again.
The clerk approached me, her expression softening from irritation to sympathy.
"Honey, you wanna take another number? I can squeeze you in if he shows up soon."
The number slip in my palm was crumpled into a ball.
I forced a smile: "No need, thank you."
The staff member sighed, "If your werebeast isn't willing to show, why'd he agree to register?"
"It's freezing out there—you're dressed so thin."
"You'll catch a cold tomorrow."
I slung my bag over my shoulder, "He probably just doesn't like me."
The staff member looked surprised: "Normally, werebeasts and humans with high compatibility easily develop feelings for each other."
I let out a bitter laugh, "Then I guess I'm the exception. Not worth liking, even for a werebeast who's stuck with me."
A subtle look of heartache appeared in the staff member's eyes: "You're very beautiful, don't belittle yourself."
"It's his fault."
"Your shoes are all wet, hurry back and change them."
I took off my completely soaked shoes and socks: "You're right."
"It's time for a change. New shoes. New clothes."
"And the man, too."
--
In the new era, werebeasts and humans are required to take a compatibility test once they come of age.
Casper was my high-compatibility match assigned by the Shifter Bureau.
Few days ago, he came to me and said, "We can go register our marriage."
His tone sounded earnest. "I was immature before, but I've finally come to my senses this time."
"Truth is, our compatibility rate is off the charts."
"I think spending the rest of my life with you wouldn't be half bad."
And so, I headed to the county clerk's office bright and early that morning.
I'd only drunk iced coffee to reduce facial bloating, wanting to look decent for the marriage photos. Now a dull ache was already twisting in my stomach.
My number was called and skipped for the first time. On the phone, Casper sounded even more flustered than I was. "I'm so sorry, Sasha Hastings. My car broke down all of a sudden, and my phone died on me."
"I'm grabbing a taxi right now. Could you wait another half hour for me?"
It was rare to hear his tone so gentle, taking the time to explain everything properly.
My irritation melted away. "Then hurry over."
I waited half an hour after another, until the county clerk's office finally closed its doors.
Casper's phone, which had been unreachable all day, finally went through.
The background on his end was filled with noisy chatter and laughter.
Casper's boisterous laugh rang out clearest of all. "She actually waited here for me the entire day."
"I won the bet! C'mon, pay up, everyone."
I struggled hard to hold back the lump burning in my throat. "Casper… if you don't have feelings for me at all."
"Why even bring up marrying me in the first place?"
A heavy silence fell on the other end, followed by quiet whispers and murmurs from the surrounding crowd.
It only dawned on me belatedly that Casper had me on speakerphone.
His cold sneer cut through the noise sharp and clear. "Sasha Hastings, did you genuinely think I'd fallen for you?"
"If it weren't for this lousy assigned matching system, I'd never get tangled up with an older woman like you."
"Getting fooled twice and still clinging to my words… are you that starved for love?"
The downpour intensified, rain drenching my cheeks.
I waited until the rain blurred my vision completely before speaking. "I am starved for love, that much is true."
"But I'm not pathetic."
"We're done here. Let's call the whole thing off."
With that, I hung up the phone.
The rain that had poured relentlessly all day suddenly ceased, right in that instant.
