I Was His Hidden Mistake Chapter 01

Five years into her marriage, Brynlie Anerdale went to the hospital with the Vitamin C her husband had bought, complaining it was far too bitter.
The doctor examined the pills and told her they weren't vitamin C at all.
"I'm sorry, Doctor... Could you repeat that?"
"Saying it again won't change the facts." The doctor pointed to the bottle. "This is Mifepristone. Taking this regularly won't just make you infertile; it will cause severe, long-term damage to your health."
Something seemed to lodge in Brynlie's throat, and her knuckles turned white as she gripped the bottle.
"That can't be right. My husband prepared these for me. His name is Patrick Gonzalez, and he also works at this hospital."
The doctor gave her an odd look, his eyes flickering with an inscrutable emotion before a faint, pitying smile touched his lips.
"Maybe you should head over to the psychiatry department. We all know Dr. Gonzalez's wife—she just gave birth two months ago. You're delusional, and it's time you woke up and faced how things really are."
With that, he pulled up a group photo on his phone.
In the picture, Patrick was in his white coat, cradling a newborn in his arms. Standing beside him was a woman smiling brightly.
It was Amoura Matier—the "close friend" he had always talked about.
A deafening roar filled Brynlie's head, leaving her mind completely blank.
The doctor had just called Amoura Patrick's wife and said that she had given him a child.
Brynlie's breathing turned shallow and heavy. She staggered into the elevator, pressing the button for the 15th floor, determined to confront Patrick.
As the doors slid shut, two familiar voices echoed in the small space.
Brynlie was bundled up in a heavy coat and a hat today, so the two people standing in front of her didn't recognize her and spoke without reservation.
"Rick, aren't you afraid Brynlie will find out? Why did you even beg her to come back in the first place? If you'd just married Moura from the start, you wouldn't have to sneak around like a thief just to see your own kid."
It was Russell Nubberd's voice.
Patrick's voice was cold. "She won't find out. Russell, watch your mouth when you're with her."
"I really don't get you," Russell scoffed. "Moura has been practically promised to you since she was five. You doted on her through your whole childhood, only to fall for Brynlie afterward.
"You sent Moura away for Brynlie's sake, and then went to all that trouble to bring her back. Which one of them do you actually love?"
Patrick fell silent for a long moment before finally speaking. "I love Bryn, but I can't just let go of Moura, either. It breaks my heart thinking about how difficult her life was during those years abroad.
"I've already made Bryn my wife. Giving Moura a child is the least I can do—she'd have someone to lean on."
Russell sighed and pressed further. "If you have a child with Brynlie someday, will you treat both children fairly? I have to ask—Moura is my cousin, after all."
The elevator chime cut through the air.
The sound of the doors sliding open overlapped with Patrick's blunt response. "I won't."
Russell froze, uncertain if Patrick meant he wouldn't have a child with Brynlie or that he wouldn't play favorites. Looking confused, he stepped out of the elevator.
But Brynlie understood perfectly.
Patrick meant they would never have children at all.
He had been feeding her sterilization pills for years, eliminating any threat to Amoura.
People streamed in and out of the elevator, and the air grew stuffy and hot. Yet Brynlie felt as if she had been plunged into an ice bath, chilled to the bone.
As the elevator descended to the first floor, she erupted into a violent fit of coughing, like a drowning person pulled from the deep.
Her phone vibrated in her pocket, the screen lighting up with a screenshot of a flight ticket from Patrick. "Bryn, see you at the competition tomorrow. Don't forget to wear the lucky charm I got for you."
Brynlie's composure was finally shattered. Tears rolled down her cheeks.
Patrick was always busy as a doctor, but since the day they married, he had never missed one of her competitions. No matter where she raced—even if it required a red-eye flight—he was always there, waiting at the finish line exactly on time.
Every year, he took care of everything—booking the restaurant, buying the flowers, and being there to witness her triumph.
She remembered how his friends used to tease them, saying she was the "one who got away"—the woman Patrick had risked his life to win over.
To bring her home, he had gone to war with foreign clubs over her contract, narrowly escaping danger more than once.
To keep her by his side, he had spent a fortune hiring a world-class coaching team and opened a racing club exclusively for her.
After the wedding, his devotion had been absolute.
Once, when she mumbled in her sleep about missing her mother, he spent the entire night pulling every string he had to retrieve her mother's old belongings before the sun even rose.
And yet, this was the same Patrick who had been secretly building an entire second family behind her back.
Brynlie suddenly understood everything.
No wonder Amoura knew the Gonzalez residence better than she did. No wonder, despite supposedly being abroad for years, she knew all his friends' nicknames. No wonder he had put six months of surgeries on hold just to go racing with her.
Amoura was never like a "sister" to Patrick. She had been promised to him since they were children.
Only moments ago, Brynlie had been thinking that if Amoura dared to wedge herself into her marriage, she would show no mercy.
Now she realized that she was the intruder—she was the one who needed to leave.
The warmth drained from her, leaving her limbs numb and rooting her to the spot.
She used to think that when people fell apart, they would scream and cry. But now that it was actually happening, she understood that a true breakdown is completely silent.
The unstoppable tears and the crushing weight in her chest were the only proof that she was drowning in pain.
Her heart felt as if it were being crushed by a giant hand, squeezing the last drop of life from her body.
The phone vibrated again. It was a family photo from Amoura, followed by a message. "Bryn, stop clinging to a life that was never yours. I thought you'd have the decency to step aside, but you're more shameless than I thought. Rick says the baby looks just like him. Don't you agree?"
Brynlie simply glanced at it before closing the chat.
If Amoura wanted Patrick that badly, she could have him.
But Brynlie knew Patrick all too well. Once he set his mind on something, he would never let go easily—even if he no longer wanted it.
Her finger hovered over the screen for a long time before she finally dialed the number she had almost forgotten.
The moment the call connected, she spoke, her voice trembling.
"Timothy, about that bet we made... Is it still on?"
