Goodbye Mr. Ex Chapter 01

Hazel’s POV
After being scratched by the werefox again, I went to the hospital alone.
"The wound is so deep, it's definitely going to leave a scar. Has your werebeast even received any socialization training?" the nurse grumbled.
"He has. He was an outstanding graduate, actually," I smiled bitterly.
My phone suddenly rang.
My werefox, Julian Vance, had sent me a rare flurry of messages.
“It's just a little scratch. Is it really necessary to go to the hospital?”
“I'm hungry. Hurry back and cook for me.”
“I can't even get a full meal staying with you.”
“You really are doing a terrible job raising me.”
So that was what he thought?
I turned around, went to the Werebeast Registry.
"I want to exchange my werebeast."
***
"You and your werebeast have been registered for a full year now, and you'll soon be able to form a Mating bond. Why choose to exchange your werebeast now?" a staff member asked routinely.
A bitter taste spread in my mouth.
Has it already been a year?
I used to look forward to the Mating bond so much, excitedly discussing ring designs with Julian.
Julian would just curl his lips in a mocking sneer.
"Do you think you're worthy of me?
"Crying is useless. I will never form a Mating bond with you.
"Let me tell you, inferior human: you look absolutely disgusting when you cry."
I was indeed the most inferior kind of human, only capable of doing basic menial jobs.
No matter how hard I tried, I could never meet the living standards Julian demanded.
In fact, it was a complete accident that I was even able to buy a pureblood werefox like Julian.
"He doesn't like me," I choked out.
You could even say he loathes me.
The staff member looked surprised.
"Trained werebeasts will love their masters wholeheartedly. Normally, a problem like this would never happen."
Yeah, a problem that would never happen, yet I ran right into it.
"Maybe it's just my bad luck," I smiled, trying to sound as lighthearted as possible.
The staff member showed an apologetic expression.
"It must be a flaw in our training. Please don't blame yourself. Come with me."
Buying Julian had cost me half a million.
I could choose a replacement from werebeasts in the same price range.
My gaze swept over those faces—slightly inferior to Julian's, but still beautiful.
The profiles read: Werefox, Wereleopard…
"Are there any others?" I asked hesitantly.
I wanted a canine.
Preferably a golden retriever.
I heard that golden retriever werebeasts are very fond of humans.
Then even an inferior human like me, they should like me a lot, right?
The staff member maintained a polite smile.
"Not at the moment.
"But werebeasts are bred very quickly. The next batch will be available in two months.
"To compensate you, we'll let you have first pick when the time comes."
I nodded.
As the staff member was walking me out, a loosely glued photo fell out of the brochure.
The man in the photo had cold, gray slit pupils, a high bridge of the nose, broad shoulders, and a narrow waist; his beauty was sharp and piercing.
It was a werewolf.
The staff member sighed.
"Actually, he's the most obedient werebeast we have here.
"The higher-ups wanted to try opening up a new market.
"But everyone is terrified of werewolves going berserk.
"Management is afraid of taking a loss, so they're selling him to the beast arena today.
"But he's been raised to be docile since he was a pup. Going to the arena is a dead end for him.
"Nobody wants him. It's really so pitiful!"
Nobody wants him?
Nobody wants me, either.
But...
The staff member sighed even louder.
"I heard that if they go to the beast arena, they get torn to pieces."
That must hurt a lot.
Werewolves should count as dogs too, right?
I stopped.
"Is he really obedient?"
"Yes! Really!" The staff member's eyes lit up.
"Then I'll take this one!"
The staff member said the werewolf would be delivered in three days.
I carefully tucked the adoption transfer agreement into my bag.
On the way home, from a distance, I saw Julian and Chloe Sterling.
Bathed in the sunset glow, the white-haired Julian looked like a work of art with his deep-set eyes and exquisite features.
Chloe was a superior human from the neighboring gated community.
Smart and elegant.
Completely different from me.
Ever since she met Julian, she always came by to drop off premium nutrient fluids.
The two of them were unusually close.
My steps slowed.
Chloe saw me.
"Hazel, off to work again?"
She flashed a subtle smile.
"I don't mean to judge, but even if you and Julian are about to form a Mating bond, you should still dress up a bit.
"Look at what you're... wearing...
"Walking down the street, who would believe you two are a couple?"
I looked at my simple T-shirt and jeans, then at her beautiful dress.
"I think this is fine."
Julian didn't look at me.
"She wouldn't look good even if she dressed up. Better to pretend she just doesn't know how. Saves people from saying she's just plain ugly," he looked at Chloe, his voice low.
"Julian, how can you say that to a young girl!" Chloe swatted his arm.
Julian curled his lips.
It was a flawless smile, yet full of mockery.
"You mean well, but she just thinks you're being nosy.
"Inferior humans can't comprehend the thoughts of superior humans.
"Being bought by her is the worst luck of my life."
Actually, Julian wasn't like this before.
Even though I couldn't afford the premium nutrient fluids a high-class werebeast needed, and even though the clothes I bought chafed his delicate skin.
Julian always firmly said that meeting me was a stroke of luck.
The turning point was when we ran into Julian's former rival on the street, the red werefox.
My bag dropped to the ground, and Julian helped me pick up my scattered things.
The red werefox stepped out of a car and planted a foot right on Julian's hand.
He let out a sharp yelp.
"Isn't this the ever-popular Julian?
"How come... you ended up with such an ugly inferior human?
"Makes sense, though. A defective werebeast and an inferior human—a perfect match."
Julian locked himself in his room for the night, and I guarded the door until dawn.
I told him it was wrong to divide people into classes, so he shouldn't care that the Werebeast Registry labeled him as defective.
We were living perfectly fine, after all.
Julian opened the door, his eyes red and swollen.
"You've never been in the clouds, so of course you think being trash isn't so bad."
Later, he met Chloe.
Chloe came from a noble background and could give Julian so much.
They grew closer by the day.
Sometimes, as they chatted, Chloe would lean against him.
"You're mine. Can you keep your distance from Chloe?" I brought it up cautiously once.
Julian shot me a condescending glance.
Cold and resentful.
"Hazel, if I hadn't been defective, how could you have ever bought me?
“You just took advantage of my misfortune.
“What gives you the right to act like my master?"
But it was Julian who begged me to save him back then.
