He Erased Me From Life Chapter 01

The day I decided to donate my body, I called my brother, Patrick Mueller, whom I hadn't spoken to in seven years.
It took him a long time to answer. The moment he picked up, I got straight to the point.
Then, I carefully added that it was just a signature and wouldn't take much of his time.
But he just cursed under his breath and hung up.
So I traveled all the way to his city with the paperwork.
When I got there, he was in the middle of a busy day.
He signed without a second thought, not even sparing me a glance.
Then, almost impatiently, he added, "Add one more clause. When you actually die, don't notify me."
I nodded. "Okay."

After my last medical lab class, I was leaving the teaching building with my notes in hand when I suddenly tripped on flat ground.
I must have twisted my calf.
By the time I made it back to my office, the short walk had left my back damp with sweat.
Since I didn't have any afternoon classes, I decided to drive to the hospital.
I gave the doctor a quick rundown—just busy with work lately, a bit of fatigue, maybe a cold.
I asked for some ointment for the strain and a few cold meds.
Instead, he handed me a thick stack of test orders and insisted on a full workup.
The results came out the next day.
I stared at the long, complicated diagnosis on the report. It was amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
After a long silence, I looked at the doctor. "I don't understand."
After confirming I didn't have any family with me, he explained gently. "Most people call it ALS."
I was a medical instructor myself, so I understood exactly what that term meant.
But I just couldn't understand how something so rare had happened to me.
I took a two-week leave and stayed home, trying to process the news.
By the last couple of days, I'd accepted it and made a decision.
If I were going to die soon, I wanted to donate my body to the medical school where I work so it could be used for ALS research.
I finished filling out the donation form. Only the family signature line remained blank.
My grip tightened around the pen, and my knuckles turned white.
Now, there was only one person in my family I had left.
If I could still bring myself to call him that.
Night settled in, leaving the bedroom quiet and bare.
I picked up my phone.
After a long hesitation, I dialed the number for the first time in seven years.
I asked, "Can you sign a body donation form for me?"
