My Second Chance Incubus Chapter 01

Through the half-open door, Ezra's words, full of disgust, drilled into my ears without missing a single syllable.
I stood frozen in place, my mind going completely blank.
The customer service from the incubus store was still urging for a reply.
I mechanically tapped open the chat box, my typing fingertips trembling uncontrollably.
[Yes.]
Receiving my reply, the representative seemed as if granted a pardon, hastily promising that the new incubus would arrive at my door in three days.
[What about the old one?]
I asked.
The reply came quickly.
[Dear customer, a malfunctioning incubus is considered a defective product. Normally, it needs to be returned for maintenance.]
[But since your incubus is already lost, there is no need for that.]
[You also don't have to trouble yourself with looking for him anymore.]
My fingertips hovered over the keyboard.
[I've already found...]
I had heard that returned incubi had to go through a very painful maintenance process.
I hesitated for a moment, then deleted the drafted message.
Turning off my phone screen, I looked up and saw Ezra carefully dabbing ointment onto my sister's wrist.
He was frowning slightly, his expression earnest and devoted.
It suddenly dawned on me that Ezra started getting lost exactly a week ago, right after my sister called me.
On the phone, she said she had accidentally burned her hand while cooking and asked if I could come take care of her for a few days.
I refused.
From the moment I hung up, Ezra's mood had been off. He always wore a solemn expression, staring blankly at the door.
That very night, Ezra got lost for the first time.
I searched for over an hour before finding him at the entrance of a nearby pharmacy.
Then came the second time, the third time, the fourth time...
In just one short week, Ezra had gotten lost ten times.
Every time, I was burning with anxiety, dropping all my work to look for him everywhere, terrified that he might have an accident.
But thinking back on it now, every place I found Ezra was closer to my sister's house than the last.
So, he didn't get lost by accident.
He had gone out on purpose, trying to find my sister because he couldn't stop worrying about her injury.
"Chloe, what are you doing here?"
While I was lost in thought, the door was pushed open from the inside.
My sister Kyler's voice rang in my ears.
"When did you get here?
Why are you so soaked?"
The dim yellow light poured out, illuminating my wretched state.
On the way to find Ezra, it had happened to start raining.
I was drenched to the bone, my long hair mixed with sweat, clinging in winding trails to my forehead and cheeks, sticky and uncomfortable.
But I had no time to care about that, my mind entirely consumed by the missing Ezra.
Kyler, wearing a clean and pretty white dress, stood by the door looking me up and down.
"You're here looking for Ezra, right?"
Saying that, she stepped aside.
Ezra stood in the middle of the living room. The moment he saw me, a flash of awkwardness crossed his face.
But it quickly morphed back into his familiar arrogance and disgust.
"Are you stupid?
Don't you know to use an umbrella when it rains?"
"You're dripping wet. If you dirty the floor, you'll just cause more trouble for Kyler."
"Ezra!"
Kyler scolded gently, "You can't speak like that."
"Chloe must have gotten like this because she was out looking for you."
Ezra obediently shut his mouth, turning his head away to avoid looking at me.
"Chloe, don't take it to heart."
Kyler's tone was doting, adopting the posture of a master, as if Ezra were her personal incubus.
Yet clearly, I was the one who had paid to bring him home.
"Come in, take a shower, and change into some clean clothes?"
I looked up, glancing at Ezra, then at Kyler.
I wanted to laugh, but I truly had no energy left.
"No."
I said, "I'm afraid of dirtying your floor."
I turned and walked away, Kyler's saddened voice trailing behind me.
"Ezra, hurry and go home with Chloe.
"She must be mad at me. Please talk some sense into her for me."
I didn't want to hear anymore, so I simply quickened my pace.
