Too Late He Chose Another Me Chapter 01

Five years into our marriage, I died saving Anthony Sanford.
The only thing I left him was our four-year-old son, Denzel Sanford.
After that, Anthony raised Denzel alone, living quietly on memories of me, until he met Anastasia Hancock, who pursued him relentlessly.
No matter how many times she told him how she felt, he always turned her down politely.
"I promised Cecilia I'd love her forever and she'd be my only wife."
My soul hovered nearby, watching, silently praying he would keep that promise.
But not long after, Anastasia risked her life to save Denzel in a fire and fell into a coma.
Anthony could no longer hold back. He knelt beside her hospital bed, begging her to come around.
But she didn't.
Instead, I found my soul trapped in her body. When I opened "my" eyes, I saw Anthony.
He didn't recognize me.
He just choked out the words, "Anastasia, I love you."

For a second, I thought I'd misheard.
But he said it again. "Anastasia, I love you.
"I already told my parents. Once you're out of danger and awake, we'll start planning the wedding.
"Thank goodness you're okay..."
He pressed my hand against his cheek and looked at me with devotion.
I didn't know how to tell him I wasn't Anastasia.
I was Cecilia Gallegos, his wife.
I also didn't know how to face the fact that he had truly fallen in love with Anastasia.
Seeing my silence, Anthony grew anxious and apologized.
"I'm sorry, Annie. I was wrong before. I fell for you long ago. I was just too cowardly to admit it.
"I swear, from now on, I'll love you with all my heart. Okay?"
It was exactly what he'd said when he proposed to me years ago.
Back then, I'd clung to his arm, laughing and teasing, "It's a deal. If you ever change your mind, I'll never forgive you. Even if I'm dead!"
And now, at this moment, all I could do was dig my nails into my palms and hold back my tears.
"But I'm not Ana—"
Before I could finish, someone rushed into the ward.
"Mom! You're finally awake!"
I froze, watching as Denzel threw himself into my arms, crying until his eyes were red and swollen.
His small body was warm against mine. A surge of dizzying joy overwhelmed me, and my voice trembled.
"W-What did you call me?
"Say it again, will ya?"
It had been so long since I'd heard Denzel call me "Mom."
But before he could speak again, Anthony covered his mouth and corrected him gently.
"You can't call her that yet. Anastasia hasn't agreed to marry me.
"She's not your mom right now."
His words hit me like a punch to the gut, reminding me that I was Anastasia.
Even Anthony hadn't noticed anything off.
How could the young Denzel possibly know I was his mother?
My nose stung.
I lowered my head and tried to explain again, "I'm actually Denzel's mom..."
But Anthony misunderstood and grabbed my hand excitedly.
"So you're saying you'll marry me?"
I froze, about to shake my head when Denzel hugged me happily.
"That's great! Anastasia, you'll be my mom from now on, right?"
I looked at the joy on their faces, and the truth on the tip of my tongue died there.
In the three years since I died, this was the first time they had looked this overjoyed.
They truly liked Anastasia.
As for me, I'd been dead for three years.
Even if I didn't want this, how could I take away the happiness they'd finally found?
Eyes burning, I turned my face away and nodded.
"Okay."
I didn't know when I might disappear from this borrowed life.
If all they wanted was Anastasia, then I would give them what they wished for.
