I'll Spend My Life Making It Right Chapter 01

I was treated like a maid by my husband Bradley and his best friend’s widow Allison for thirty years.
Bradley said Allison was too fragile after losing her husband, asked me to take good care of her, and he would introduce her as his wife to the world.
I tended to them carefully for years, until at my birthday banquet, she slapped me in front of everyone, saying I was shameless baik maid who tried to seduce her husband.
Bradley, my husband of 30 years, simply stood to the side without saying a word.
My children, Isaac and Isabelle Harris, whom I had poured my heart into, hugged Allison to comfort her. "Don't be mad, Mom."
"Yeah, arguing with a maid is beneath you."

I stood frozen in place, the slap mark on my face still burning hot.
Allison's sharp nails had scratched my face, leaving a long bloody mark.
The guests, eyes wide in shock at the drama, whispered among themselves. "So, it's the homewrecker's birthday?!"
"According to Ms. Talbert, this woman is just a maid."
"I can't believe this frumpy-looking woman has been trying to seduce Mr. Harris. She even photoshopped their wedding photo!"
"She's that old and still has no sense of shame whatsoever."
Allison wasn't finished. A cold snort escaped her lips as she projected footage of me showering onto the massive screen.
She sneered viciously. "Take a look at how she seduces my husband!
"She is completely shameless!
"She actually showers with the door open while my husband is home!
"All these years, I fed and put a roof over her head. What have I done wrong?!"
In the video, my naked body was faintly visible through the fogged-up glass.
My heart clenched. I had no idea Allison had filmed me in secret.
It had been my birthday, and Bradley, saying he wanted to fulfill his marital duties, told me to go take a shower. That was why I let my guard down!
I looked at Bradley, trembling all over, but he avoided my gaze.
As the steam thinned on screen, the men stared with lecherous intent, and the women's voices grew louder.
"How shameless of her!"
"Man-stealing bitch!"
"What a slut!"
Before I knew it, cake, drinks, greasy leftovers, and kitchen scraps were raining down on me from the crowd.
Disheveled and in pain, I reached out and yanked the power cord free. Then I clung onto Bradley and said, "Show them our marriage certificate or say something, okay?
"Please, my students are here."
I knelt before my husband of 30 years, begging him desperately. He had kept our marriage certificate hidden ever since Allison moved in.
I had devoted my entire life to my career; I couldn't bear to see it destroyed over something I never did, just as I was nearing retirement.
Bradley looked at me without moving. A trace of sympathy appeared in his eyes, but Allison immediately covered her chest and coughed violently twice. "Honey, what have I done wrong?
"I did all of this because I love you too much, and I can't stand the thought of sharing you with someone else. Am I wrong for that?"
The sympathy on Bradley's face vanished at once. He ignored my pleas, choosing to defend Allison. What he said broke my heart. "This maid doesn't seem to know her place, and she's made inappropriate advances on me. I'm sorry all of you had to witness that."
With that, he left me drowning in humiliation.
Then he helped Allison to her seat and shot me a pointed look. I knew he was telling me to be sensible, to put Allison first in everything because of her so‑called fragile health.
A sharp, jagged pain flared in my chest, as if my heart were being torn out.
I'd done that for 25 years. Wasn't that enough?
Isaac dragged me to the side, and Isabelle scolded me loudly in front of everyone, "You're just a maid, Suzanne. Know your place!
"Do we have to show videos proving what a shameless person you are before you realize your mistakes?!
"Stop trying to ruin our family!"
I stared at her in utter disbelief and despair—I'd loved her with everything I had, yet this was what I got.
My kids avoided my gaze.
They were aware of Allison's true identity, yet they chose to side with her.
If I stayed any longer, I would be ridiculed further.
I never expected my 50th birthday to end like this. I ran back to my room, humiliated and covered in filth.
Bradley wanted to call out to me, but Allison gently grabbed his arm. In the end, he kept quiet.
Back in my room, I shivered nonstop.
Staring at my disheveled reflection, I felt like I was looking at a complete stranger.
With the constant rain outside, the bitter wind pierced right through me, leaving me chilled to the very soul.
I used to think Bradley and I would hold onto our wedding vows and grow old together.
But now, none of that mattered to me.
The moment he turned me away with such indifference, all the love I held for him vanished into thin air.
I dug out a yellowed address book and hesitated for a long moment before dialing a number. After a torturous wait, the call went through.
My tears fell as I said in a hoarse voice, "I regret it all, Lila. Can I come to Australia to be with you?
"I'm done with Bradley."
