You Lost Me Five Years Ago Chapter 01

Five years after the breakup, I suddenly received a call from Sergio Campbell. "Vanessa, let's register our marriage at City Hall in five days. The grand wedding I promised you will be held at Hilley Manor."
It took me a moment to process what he'd just said. Still in shock, I blurted, "Didn't we break up five years ago?"
A scoff came from the other end of the line. "Break up? I never agreed to that. You suddenly came back to the States because you heard I was getting married, didn't you?
"Don't worry, the bride is you. As for Ann, I hope you can be more magnanimous. During the five years you were gone, she was the one who stayed by my side. I trust you'll treat her well."
I rolled my eyes and hung up.
Now I had married into one of the richest families in the US and had both a son and a daughter. Why would I want to marry a jerk like him?

In the dead of night, there came an unceasing knock at the door.
"Open the door! Vanessa, how long are you going to keep throwing a fit?"
I yanked the villa's front door open. Sergio's gaze swept over me briefly before he sneered, "Without me, is this what you've been reduced to?"
Only then did I notice that the loubaikar I had hurriedly thrown on was actually my mom's.
The color was a bit old-fashioned, but the material was comfortable.
I was just about to speak when Sergio interrupted me. "Alright. Since you know you were wrong and you've come back, I'll forgive you for leaving in a huff back then."
He shifted his tone, and his smile faded slightly. "But the slap you gave Ann back then—I can't forgive you on her behalf. The reason we can get married now is entirely because of her generosity. I hope you can apologize to her.
"Ann is gentle and kind. During the days you were gone, she took care of me. Because of you, I can't marry her, but I hope you can treat her like family. We can give her a home together."
Listening to him, I felt nothing but absurdity.
"Sergio, what makes you think I can't live without you? Have you ever considered that five years is long enough for me to get married and have kids?"
Sergio gave a mocking laugh. "Everyone in high society knows you're mine. You've had a bad temper since you were little. Other than me, who would put up with you?
"Vanny, your family has already fallen from grace. What family would accept you now? Other than me, who would marry you?"
I laughed out loud.
Sergio and I had been engaged since childhood. Although it was a family alliance, we'd been in love, and he had once promised that after graduation, he would hold a grand wedding for me at Hilley Manor.
But before we even graduated, he killed Ansley Nelson's grandmother in a drag racing accident, and from then on, Ansley clung to him relentlessly.
She kept provoking me, and eventually, I couldn't help slapping her.
Sergio held her in his arms, his face full of disappointment. "You know how pitiful Ann is. She has already lost her only family member. I'm all she has left now. Can't you be more understanding?
"It seems I've spoiled you too much. Take some time to calm down."
That so-called calming down meant giving me the silent treatment for three months, while he took Ansley out every day to flaunt their affection.
Soon, everyone believed he had dumped me and moved on to a new girlfriend. I left him a message: "Let's break up."
Without looking back, I went to Paris to heal. I never expected that trip would lead me to meet my current husband.
"You smiled. I knew you still loved me. Otherwise, why would you smile at me?"
Sergio reached out to touch my face, but I sidestepped him. "I just love to smile. Sorry for giving you the wrong idea, Mr. Campbell."
He shook his head helplessly, an indulgent smile forming. "Vanny, you're still as mischievous as ever. I know how much you love me. Since you've waited for five years, I'll surely give you the most perfect wedding!"
Seeing he was still lost in his delusion, I stomped hard on his toe and ground down on it. While he cried out in pain, I swiftly slammed the door shut.
It was a pity that I was wearing flats instead of heels.
Through the heavy door, I said, "Sergio, get lost. We were over five years ago!"
He stared at the shoe print on his foot and smiled as if enlightened. "Fine then. Since you're shy, I won't go in today.
"Tomorrow I'll have someone deliver the wedding dress to you. Ann picked it out. It fits her perfectly, so you should be able to wear it too..."
I suddenly felt a bit of regret for refusing my husband's company. Coming back to the country alone had indeed been a terrible decision.
I couldn't help kicking the front door, signaling him to shut up.
He frowned. "Vanessa, you really should fix that temper of yours. My wife shouldn't be this grumpy. You should learn from Ann."
"Sergio, since Ansley is so wonderful, why don't you marry her instead?"
I meant that sincerely. I had to admit, the two of them were quite well matched.
Sergio's laughter came again from outside the door. "Vanny, you're jealous again. How many times have I said it? You're the only one I love. Just wait to put on the wedding dress and be my bride!"
Whatever. In a few days, my parents would return to the States with my kids, and my husband would come as well. Once Sergio saw them, he naturally wouldn't bother me anymore.
