I Let The Past Drift Away Chapter 01

Damian looked at the divorce papers I was handing him, his brows drawing tightly together.
He didn't take the two thin sheets of paper. Instead, he let out a cold scoff.
"Sienna Hayes! When are you going to stop using divorce as a threat every time something doesn't go your way?
"Zoe is just someone who needs protection. Do you really get anything out of competing with her?"
I looked calmly at the man I had loved for seven years.
In my previous life, it was this very face, this very man, who had personally given the order to have me disfigured and crippled.
"Sign it. Once you do, I'll go in and take the blame for her."
I shoved the pen into his hand.
Irritated, Damian yanked at his tie and ripped the divorce papers to pieces in one motion.
A flurry of paper scraps drifted down across the steps in front of the police station.
"You know perfectly well that my family's shares are still under your name right now. What happens to the company if we divorce?
"Enough of this. Be good and go inside for a few months. I'll make sure everything is taken care of."
He reached out his hand to pat my head, a habit he'd formed over the years.
I turned away and dodged him.
Damian's hand froze in midair, and his expression darkened at once.
A weak, delicate voice came from behind him.
"Enna, are you still blaming me?"
Zoey ran over in one of Damian's oversized dress shirts, her bare legs visible beneath it.
She slipped her arm around Damian's with practiced ease and shot me a prov0cative glance.
"Dami and I are really just best friends. We grew up together from the time we were little kids, with no secrets between us.
"If you really can't stand the sight of me, I'll go turn myself in right now. At worst, I'll get sentenced to ten years or so."
As she spoke, her eyes reddened, and she made a show of rushing toward the station.
Damian grabbed her and pulled her into his arms.
"Stop talking nonsense! If your claustrophobia acts up, you might not survive it!"
Then he turned and glared at me.
"Sienna, look at how considerate Zoe is. Then look at that jealous face of yours.
"It's settled. You're taking the blame. Before you go in, hand over the company seal for the Southside project."
I watched their performance in silence.
"The seal is in my private safe. I'm the only one who knows the combination.
"If you want it, sign the divorce papers first."
I took a backup copy of the divorce agreement from my bag and held it out to him again.
Damian's patience finally snapped. He seized my wrist hard.
"Do you really think I can't live without you?
"Sienna, don't push your luck. My family can lift you, and we can leave you with nothing just as easily."
A sharp pain shot through my wrist, but I did not struggle.
At his side, Zoey chimed in, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
"Dami, don't be so harsh with Enna. She's just a woman, after all. She's not as tough as I am.
"If she doesn't want to hand it over, then forget it. At worst, I can just give up on my studio."
When Damian heard that, a flicker of guilt passed through his eyes, and his grip tightened even more.
"That studio is the only thing your father left you to remember him by. You can't give it up."
He stared at me, his gaze full of warning.
"This is your last chance. Hand over the seal, then get in there to take the blame."
Two police officers stepped out of the front doors and asked who was responsible for the hit-and-run.
Without the slightest hesitation, Damian pointed at me.
"Her. My wife, Sienna Hayes."
The cold handcuffs snapped shut around my wrists with a crisp metallic click.
I obediently followed the officers inside.
Behind me, Zoey's sweet, affected voice rang out again.
"Enna, behave yourself in there and work on yourself. I'll take good care of Dami for you."
I stopped and turned to look at the man and woman standing together.
"Damian, I hope you won't regret the decision you made today."
