He Lost Me To His Best Friend Chapter 01
Dorian Blackwell and I had grown up side by side, childhood friends from the very beginning.
His girlfriend, Sabrina Prescot, had always minded that.
Time and again, I became the wedge between them, fueling their endless cycle of dramatic breakups and tearful reconciliations, with her leaving and him chasing after her.
Until one night at a party, Sabrina called me out in front of everyone. "Maeve, how about I get you a boyfriend?"
In the heavy silence that followed, I lifted my eyes and glanced past her to the man beside Dorian—his closest friend, Ronan Ashford.
Then I smiled and shook my head. "No need. I already have a boyfriend."
The very next second, Dorian's face darkened. He clenched his hand around his glass until it shattered in his grip.
***
Dorian and Sabrina had gotten back together again.
When I heard the news, I felt nothing at all.
Meanwhile, Tessa Lennox was gleefully texting me the gossip.
"This time, they stayed broken up for a full three months before getting back together. That has to be a record."
"I heard Sabrina left the country out of spite, and Dorian went after her overseas just to beg her back."
"They've been dating for two years and have broken up at least five times. Don't they get exhausted?"
I smiled to myself and didn't reply.
"Dorian's probably about to start shouting in the group chat again about treating everyone to dinner..."
"Are you going?"
I sent a sticker that politely declined.
"No. I'm busy practicing piano. I have a competition next month."
"All right. I'm still going, though. I have to go see what fresh chaos those two lunatics are bringing this time. If I get any new gossip, I'll pass it along."
"Okay." I followed it with a Doge sticker.
After that, I put my phone down and went back to practicing.
About half an hour later, I picked it up again and saw that Tessa had sent another message.
It looked like she had been weighing her words for a long time before finally asking.
"But...do you know why they broke up this time?"
"No."
Tessa replied almost instantly. "I heard it was because Sabrina found out that Dorian's phone passcode...was your birthday."
***
On Friday, the friend group chat, which had been quiet for ages, suddenly came to life.
No surprise there—it was Dorian, posting that he and his girlfriend were back together and that he was taking everyone out to dinner at the usual place.
The others piled in with their usual mix of congratulations and playful roasting. "Honestly, we're used to it by now, but congratulations anyway."
"Ian, you're slipping. This one took way longer than usual!"
"When am I finally going to reach the end of these reunion dinners of yours?"
***
I was in the middle of typing that I wouldn't be going when Sabrina suddenly tagged me in the group chat.
Sabrina texted, "Mae, you have to come."
I replied, "Sorry, I've been pretty busy lately."
Sabrina responded, "Oh, come on, it's just dinner!" Sabrina texted again, "I always used to misunderstand the relationship between you and Ian. I'm sure that must have caused you a lot of trouble."
Sabrina texted further, "I just want to apologize to you in person. Come on, do me the favor."
An awkward, icy silence gripped the chat.
No one said another word.
I gripped my phone, suddenly overcome with irritation.
A moment later, I replied, "Okay."
