My Ex Came Crawling Back Chapter 01

After we were done, Benjamin Kilbreth tossed me my underwear and said, "Pack your things and move out tomorrow. Don't ever come back."
I froze, asking instinctively, "Why?"
He lit a cigarette, his eyes filled with a tenderness and longing I had never seen before. "She's coming back."
I knew exactly who he meant—Emersyn Nuttall, his one true love.
I stayed out of his life, just as he wished.
But he called me, panicked and devastated. "How could you leave me?"

After hours of sex, Benjamin finally collapsed onto me, his breathing heavy and ragged.
Then he rolled off and headed to the shower.
When he emerged, I was still in bed.
Even after all this time, I still couldn't keep up with his incredible stamina.
Benjamin toweled off his damp hair, then casually hooked my underwear off the floor and tossed them to me. "Pack your things and move out tomorrow. Don't ever come back."
I had been in this arrangement with Benjamin for three years.
It started when I was just his secretary. After a few too many drinks at a banquet, we naturally ended up in bed together.
The first time he brought me here, he refused to let me stay the night, claiming he wasn't used to sleeping beside anyone and telling me to go home once we were finished.
But his desire was unusually intense. Soon, he began to crave more and started letting me stay over.
To the rest of the world, I was his most capable assistant, meticulously taking care of everything for him.
In private, we were no different from a committed couple.
Whether it was my birthday or a holiday, he would cancel every party and meeting just to be alone with me.
He was stoic and serious in front of others, but with me, he wasn't afraid to be needy or show his emotions.
I had grown so used to this life that I'd even started to imagine a future with him—maybe building a family and finally having a real home of our own.
But now, he told me not to come back anymore.
My hands faltered while I was hooking my bra. "Are you going on a business trip?" I asked reflexively. "How is it that I didn't know—"
Benjamin lit a cigarette, calmly cutting me off, "She's coming home."
The tenderness and longing in his eyes were like nothing I had ever seen before.
I instantly realized who he meant—Emersyn, the woman he never got over.
In the height of passion, he'd held me and murmured a name in a delirium.
I only learned the truth later: it belonged to the one woman he loved but could never have.

I couldn't stand the smell of smoke, and it made my throat feel tight and hoarse. "Is she moving in?"
Benjamin's face was blurred behind a haze of gray, though his voice remained gentle. I watched him shake his head.
"She's not like you. She's not the type of woman who gives herself away so casually.
"I'm just worried she'll get the wrong idea if she sees your things when she comes to visit me.
"Honestly, she's so pure and innocent. She won't even let me kiss her, let alone..."
Let alone sleep with her...
I finished the sentence for him in my head.
Fighting the sting in my eyes, I got out of bed and began gathering my clothes from the floor.
My dress had been torn, so I grabbed a pair of trousers from the closet and pulled them on.
Then, I started packing.
"There's no rush. Can't you stay until tomorrow?" Benjamin walked over and buried his face in the crook of my neck, his tone as affectionate and needy as ever. "I want you to make me that pasta again."
My hands froze as I was folding my clothes. "Alright," I said softly. "I'll make it for you."
I turned on the stove, and once the water came to a boil, I dropped in the pasta.
Once it was ready, I drained it, topped it with beef slices I'd prepared myself, and added the sauce.
As Benjamin ate, I went back to my packing. I had lived here for three years, yet everything I owned fit into a single suitcase.
It was mostly just my clothes.
I didn't take any of the kitchenware or household essentials I'd bought for him after moving in.
When I wheeled my suitcase into the living room, Benjamin gestured toward the cabinet. "You really liked that dinnerware set, didn't you?"
I followed his gaze to the pure white set we'd picked out at the store when I first moved in.
I had hesitated back then, worried it would take up too much space.
Benjamin had put it into the cart without a second thought. "If you like it, just get it," he'd said with an indulgent smile.
I shook my head. "There's no room for it in my suitcase."
I was about to walk out the door when Benjamin called out to me.
His plate was nearly empty. He looked down, lit a cigarette, and exhaled a cloud of smoke.
"At the office, we'll maintain a professional relationship," he said, his eyes dark and unreadable. "But privately, you can still come to me if you ever need anything."
I understood what he was implying. I simply nodded. "Alright."
