He Wanted My Love I Chose My Death Chapter 01
On the night I was brought back to the Midlum's residence, my husband’s eighth mistress Rylina came to me, pleading for help.
Her eyes were rimmed with red, her voice trembling. "Ms. Chammock, I know Matteo is planning to marry you. Please ask him to let me go!
"I don't love him. I never have. And I hate that he uses everyone I care about to get to me. My father is a professor, and my mother is a doctor. They're honest, decent people. They can't handle this—"
Helpless, I sighed and cut off Rylina's frantic sobbing. "I'm sorry, but I can't help you."
Rylina froze, clearly caught off guard by my blunt refusal.
The color drained from her face as she hurried to speak, "That can't be true. Don't lie to me.
"Countless women throw themselves at Matteo, yet you're the only one he's willing to marry. That shows how special you are to him. Just ask him to let me go, and he will. Or are you unwilling to help me?
"I never tried to seduce him. He set his sights on me. I never had a choice..."
She fell silent when I suddenly lifted my hands, slowly pulled the blanket from my lap, and rose from the couch.
Her gaze followed my every move, drifting downward.
Then she drew a sharp breath and staggered back, her hand flying to her mouth as her eyes widened in horror.
Chains were locked around my wrists and my ankles.
Thin silver chains pressed against my skin, their other ends disappearing into the shadows behind the couch.
"Ms. Gowlett, do you understand now?
"I'm nothing special to Matteo. He isn't marrying me out of love; he just wants to keep breaking my spirit."
Rylina was visibly terrified.
She rushed forward, reaching out to pull the chains apart. "How..." she said, voice shaking. "How could he do this to you?
"This is against the law. This is kidnapping. I have to call the police..."
I stopped her, placing my hand over hers.
Looking into her eyes, filled with genuine concern, I felt a flicker of pity stir in my chest. "Don't bother, Ms. Gowlett. I need a great deal of money, so I can't leave him.
"As for your situation... I'll speak to him about it later."
Having secured my promise, Rylina finally left, glancing back at me repeatedly as she walked away.
I picked up my phone and dialed Matteo's number.
He answered almost immediately.
Perhaps because it was the first time I had called him in all these years.
"I want to see you."
"Now?"
"Yes. Right now."
He fell silent.
A few seconds later, he replied, "I'll be there in an hour."
An hour later, the sound of a car engine echoed from the courtyard.
Matteo stepped out of the car and strode inside, carrying the lingering chill of the night air.
"What's so urgent?"
I turned to face him, getting straight to the point. "I just met with Rylina. Let her go."
A small, mocking smile crossed Matteo's face.
Amused, he leaned down, his fingers brushing against my cheek. "Cassidy, I had no idea you had such a bleeding heart. You can barely save yourself, yet you're playing the savior for someone else."
His hand was ice-cold.
I shivered at the touch but didn't pull away. Instead, I tilted my head, nuzzling my face into his palm in a purposeful act of submission. "Just take it as me being jealous.
"Matteo... can't you just be mine?"
Those words seemed to snap something in Matteo.
He abruptly gripped my chin, his eyes turning sharp, his voice a low, dangerous snarl. "Jealous?
"Do you even love me? Are you even capable of jealousy? Cut the act, Cassidy. If Rylina hadn't begged you for help, you'd probably be wishing I'd drop dead out there just so you could finally be free!
"And what if I refuse?"
I fell silent for a moment.
"Then I'll teach Rylina exactly how to torment you. I'll show her how to cause a scene, how to turn your life upside down. You know better than anyone that I'm an expert at that.
"This place isn't a prison. Are you really planning to imprison her, too?"
Matteo's eyes widened, and he shook his head.
Then he let out a sharp, bitter laugh.
"Cassidy, you... never cease to amaze me, do you?"
He crouched down in front of me.
Looking up, he said, "I'll let her go, but only on two conditions.
"First, you have to marry me. Tomorrow, we're getting our marriage license.
"Second, Cassidy... I want you to love me."
