When Spring Finally Came Chapter 01
Jason Hayes realized I was no longer obeying his every whim.
For the new semester's scholarship, I only remembered after filling out the form that I hadn't asked him if I should yield it to someone else.
When the department organized a team-building trip, I paid my own fee and didn't go to his house to act as a free maid.
Even for my weekend part-time job, I negotiated the hourly wage and shifts all by myself.
As a wealthy heir, Jason was visibly displeased when he found out.
"Why didn't you tell me you were short on money?"
"Give me your QR code, I'll transfer some to you."
I blurted out instinctively:
"I can make my own money. I won't trouble you, Mr. Hayes, thank you."
As soon as the words left my mouth, we both froze.
After all, just half a month ago, I was still the tail-wagging, begging dog he called me.
...
I used to text him for permission on everything, from what dish to get at the cafeteria to which reference book to buy.
Jason stood frozen in place, his hand holding the phone stiff in mid-air.
Probably not expecting me to refuse, he furrowed his brows, a hint of impatience creeping into his eyes.
"Charlotte Miller, what kind of tantrum are you throwing now?"
He put his phone away and tapped his knuckles twice on the table.
"Don't bring those bad habits from the outside back here."
"I'm transferring you money because those part-time jobs of yours are a meaningless waste of time."
"Instead of spending that time washing dishes, you'd be better off reading a couple of books to improve your mind."
I didn't say a word, just kept my head down and organized the part-time uniform I had just picked up.
In the past, hearing such words would make my eyes well up with tears as I argued back, saying I wanted to rely on myself, saying I wanted to stand on equal footing with him.
But he would only let out a disdainful chuckle, pat my head, and call me naive.
Now, I didn't want to argue anymore.
I folded the uniform, put it in my bag, and zipped it up.
"You're right."
I turned and walked toward the bedroom.
Jason choked on my submissive attitude; unable to vent his anger, his face darkened with suppressed frustration.
The sound of the electronic lock unlocking came from the front door.
A figure walked in.
Chloe Bennett was wearing a white dress, carrying two paper bags in her hands.
"Jason, Charlotte, I'm here."
She changed her shoes, walked over to Jason with practiced ease, and placed the paper bags on the table.
"This is from that exclusive reservation-only bistro Jason likes. I waited in line for ages to get it."
She turned to look at me, an innocent smile hanging on her face.
"Charlotte, please don't be mad. That place doesn't allow shared tables, so it's just enough for Jason and me."
Jason's originally gloomy face softened the moment he saw Chloe.
He reached out to take the paper bags, his tone gentle.
"Next time, just let the assistant handle this kind of thing. You're in poor health, don't exhaust yourself."
Chloe stuck her tongue out playfully.
"How could I do that? The thought behind it is completely different."
After she finished speaking, it was as if she had just noticed my bag.
"Are you heading out, Charlotte?"
"Where are you going so late?"
Jason let out a cold snort.
"She's going to experience life by working as a cashier at a convenience store."
Chloe covered her mouth, her eyes wide.
"Huh?
A place like that."
"You have to stand for so long and deal with difficult customers. How can you bear it, Charlotte?"
She walked over and reached out to tug at my sleeve.
"Charlotte, are you short on money?"
"If you're too embarrassed to ask Jason, I can lend you some."
"Even though I don't get much of an allowance, it's still enough to tide you over."
She said this while looking at Jason.
"Jason, please don't be mad at Charlotte anymore."
"She must be going through a hard time to act like this."
Jason pinched the bridge of his nose, the disgust in his eyes deepening as he looked at me.
"Charlotte, look at Chloe, and then look at yourself."
"Chloe is two years younger than you, yet she's so much more sensible."
"When will you ever learn to have her sense of boundaries?"
I pulled my sleeve free from Chloe's grasp.
The fabric brushed against my skin, leaving a trail of goosebumps in its wake.
"I'm not short on money."
I looked at Jason.
"I'm leaving."
Jason stood up abruptly.
"Charlotte, if you dare walk out that door today, don't ever come crawling back to me in tears."
In the past, those words would have been enough to break me.
I would have dropped my bag, run over to throw my arms around his waist, and tearfully begged for forgiveness, promising never to do it again.
But today, I simply tightened my grip on my backpack straps.
My nails dug into my palms, bringing a faint, stinging pain.
"Fine."
With that, I turned around, pushed the door open, and walked out into the night.
Behind me came the sharp crash of a glass shattering against the floor, accompanied by Jason's furious roar.
"Let her get the hell out!
Let's see how long she can keep up this tough act!"
