Too Late My Love Belonged To Another Man Chapter 01

Charlotte's POV
When Jacob Sheridan showed up at my front door—soaked through and blind in one eye—I suddenly understood why my husband, Sebastian Frazier, had taken in his childhood sweetheart, Penelope Jensen, because of her heart condition.
The one that got away really hit different.
Overcome with pity, I immediately let Jacob move into the house.
After all these years, he'd become frail and withdrawn, and even the slightest touch made him tremble uncontrollably.
I devoted all my attention to him, doing everything I could to comfort and care for him. I even forgot to be jealous of Penelope or lose control in arguments with Sebastian.
Sebastian, however, completely broke down. With red-rimmed eyes, he demanded, "Charlotte, I'm your husband, so why do you always take his side?"

On a pouring night, I saw Jacob again after years apart.
I stood under the front overhang, staring up at the pitch-black sky, my chest heavy with despair.
Penelope said she'd never seen the ocean, so Sebastian dropped everything and took her to Italy, forgetting all about our wedding anniversary.
It wasn't the first time.
Ever since she returned from overseas, he had put her before me in everything.
At meals, we had to order what she liked, and when we went out, we had to go wherever she wanted.
I kept telling myself she had a heart condition and deserved extra consideration.
That mindset lasted until Sebastian's birthday, when I put on his favorite sexy red dress and climbed onto his lap.
His breathing immediately grew uneven, and he pinned me down with a rough urgency.
Right then, a distinct ringtone cut through the moment, one he had set for Penelope.
I wanted him to ignore it and lose himself in me, but things didn't go the way I hoped.
The phone rang for only three seconds before the desire in his eyes completely disappeared.
He answered, said only a few words, then grabbed his coat and rushed out.
I was left alone on the couch, completely disheveled.
Even then, I tried to comfort myself, thinking maybe something had actually happened to Penelope.
After all, she truly wasn't in the best of health.
It took me a long time to calm myself down.
Then I picked up my phone and saw her latest post on Instagram.
The picture showed an unappealing cake, with crooked letters and an ugly design.
My attention was immediately drawn to a finger in the corner of the photo.
On that finger was a wedding ring identical to mine.
It was Sebastian.
Instinctively, I tried to make excuses for them, but her caption wiped my mind blank.
She wrote, "The knight didn't break his vow to always protect the princess, but this time, the princess wasn't hurt. Instead, she prepared a little surprise for her knight—a cake she made herself! Happy birthday, my most loyal knight!"
It turned out that nothing had happened to her at all.
It felt like my heart had been torn open, and the pain brought tears to my eyes as I curled up and shook uncontrollably.
The next day at noon, I got into a huge fight with Sebastian after he came back from her place.
It ended badly, and he moved Penelope into the house.
Of course, I objected and hysterically told her to get out of our home.
Penelope had a heart episode on the spot and was rushed to the hospital.
After that, my life fell into a loop.
Every cycle started with a fight with Sebastian and ended with her being hospitalized.
It happened over and over again, until all I felt was exhaustion.
Even with every light in the house turned on, there wasn't a trace of warmth—only loneliness.
At that moment, as if sensing something, I looked up and met a pair of eyes that felt both familiar and unfamiliar.
