Divorce On The Spot Chapter 01
At the class reunion, our homeroom teacher, Matthew Winchell, suddenly asked everyone about their relationship status.
He started with Vivica Monroe, the prettiest girl in our class. "Back then, I took away the love letter you wrote to Adrian so you could focus on your studies. Do you still hold that against me?"
Vivica's eyes shimmered with tears. She glanced at Adrian Kessler with lingering affection and shook her head.
Then Matthew turned to Adrian. "If given a second chance, would you say yes to Vivi and fix that one regret?"
Yesterday, I had just celebrated our sixth wedding anniversary with him.
Without the slightest hesitation, he said, "I would."
The room instantly buzzed with excitement.
"After everything, the golden couple can finally be together. You two are just meant for each other."
"Their unfinished story is finally getting its happy ending. Thank goodness for this reunion."
A blush crept up Vivica's cheeks, and she shot him a shy, suggestive look. Adrian smiled and didn't look away.
I lowered my head and looked at the cheap wedding ring on my ring finger.
Adrian's girlfriend had always been me. Vivica had only written him a love letter.
Yet everyone believed the one who should have been with him was Vivica.
Even Adrian had hidden the ring on his finger.
Suddenly, Vivica looked at me and said apologetically, "Nessa, could you switch seats with me? I want to sit beside Adrian."
The chatter died down as everyone turned to look at me.
Gavin laughed. "Wow, Vivi, you are so eager."
Then he turned to me.
"Come on, Nessa," he urged. "There's a seat here. Move over so you don't interrupt their romantic moment."
Another burst of laughter followed.
Vivica bit her lower lip, looking at me expectantly.
And I looked at Adrian.
"Should I switch?" I asked softly.
Adrian didn't look at me. It was as if he were deliberately avoiding me, or perhaps he didn't want others to notice our relationship.
He gave the slightest nod.
He wanted me to move.
I picked up my glass and downed it in one go.
Then I set it down, pushed my chair back, stood up, and moved to sit beside Gavin.
Vivica smiled at me gratefully and happily took the seat next to Adrian.
Someone spoke with a teasing tone. "Look at Addie and Vivi. Doesn't it remind you of when they took their graduation photos behind our backs?"
I froze, barely managing to keep my composure from crumbling.
"How could it not?" Gavin slung an arm around someone's shoulders, grinning. "Back then, for graduation photos, Adrian and Vivica insisted on doing their own thing. They said they didn't want to take pictures with unimportant people, so they told me they wouldn't be joining. I still remember Nessa asking me why Adrian didn't show up.
"In the end, I made up some story about him spraining his ankle to cover for it.
"Adrian, is that photo with Vivi still your Instagram profile picture?"
Adrian's Instagram profile picture hadn't changed since graduation—two figures in school uniforms, seen from behind.
He said he found it online to make up for missing the graduation photos.
So it had been him and Vivica all along.
I lowered my head, staring at the ring on my finger. The light reflected off it, stabbing into my eyes.
"Oh, right." Matthew suddenly turned to me, a concerned smile on his face. "I completely forgot to ask you, Nessa. You were always quiet back in school and rarely showed up to reunions after graduation. Are you married now?"
Adrian's hand froze midair as he looked straight at me.
His gaze was filled with unease and warning.
Then someone kicked my calf under the table.
The cold leather of a dress shoe brushed against my skin, sending a shiver of goosebumps up my leg.
I didn't even need to guess who it was.
Six years into our marriage, this was the first time I'd seen him so unraveled since the day he brought me to meet his parents.
He was afraid I would embarrass him, so he set up a signal to remind me when I should keep my mouth shut.
I didn't lower my head, nor did I look at Adrian.
I smiled at Matthew. "I am. But...we're getting divorced soon."
