The Day I Asked For A Divorce Chapter 01
During our honeymoon, my husband received an urgent mission to go to a war zone as a Doctors Without Borders physician.
Unwilling to live apart right after getting married, I left my job behind to accompany him.
Half a year passed. My husband had me living in the artillery-ridden war zone camp, where I nearly lost my life several times.
Meanwhile, his female student had long been arranged by him to stay in the family dormitories in the safe zone.
My eyes red with anger, I demanded to take a rescue plane back home right then and there.
Paul Hayes hurriedly pulled me into his arms, coaxing me in a low, humble voice:
"She's my student. If anything happened to her, I'd be heavily criticized. I can only ask you to bear with it for now."
"The family dormitories are being expanded. I'll apply for your residency qualification next month."
Ultimately, I understood his dilemma and stayed.
That was until I accidentally contracted a virus. When I tried to use my status as a family member to apply for priority vaccination, I was told:
"The system shows that the family member registered under Dr. Hayes is Rachel Bennett. Are you sure you're Dr. Hayes's wife?"
I felt as if I had been plunged into an icy abyss.
Rachel was exactly Paul's female student!
Disheartened and completely chilled, I dialed my brother's number:
"Brother, come pick me up and take me home. Also, bring a divorce agreement with you."
1.
"Alright, I'll go apply for the flight route right now. Three days at most. Wait for me to come get you."
I gave a soft "mm," hung up the phone, and walked back to the camp in a daze.
Paul came storming over, fuming with rage.
"Why did you desert your post and leave Rachel alone in the war zone?!"
"She was almost injured by a bomb and is undergoing psychological counseling right now."
"If this leaves her with trauma, how am I supposed to explain it to her parents!"
Facing his fierce barrage of accusations, my blurred vision merely stared at the drafty roof of the tent.
There were at least a dozen holes letting the wind in; no matter how many patches I sewed on, it was useless.
For the past two years, this was the kind of environment I had been living in.
Hiding here and there in the war zone with nothing but a ragged tent.
I didn't even know how many times I had accidentally wandered into minefields, nearly losing my life.
Plagued by nightmares every night, I had also applied for psychological counseling.
But Paul simply said:
"Encountering bombs in a war zone is very common. Don't make a fuss over nothing, leave the resources for those who actually need them."
It turned out I just wasn't qualified for him to care.
"Before I left, I made sure all team members could evacuate. None of the other members were injured by the bomb, so why was Rachel the only one?"
I curled my lips, speaking with sarcasm, though I really just wanted to remind him.
Instead, he slammed the table violently, flying into a rage.
"Are you implying that Rachel is lying?!"
"As the captain of Team Three, is this how you speculate about your subordinates?!"
"No wonder Rachel said you always hold personal grudges and target her. And to think I even spoke up for you, believing you weren't that kind of person!"
His eyes held an unconcealable disgust.
How was this the look of a husband toward his wife?
It was clearly more like looking at an enemy.
The virus wreaked havoc in my body, and my heart ached terribly.
I had no strength left to argue with him.
"I left early because I contracted the virus."
I swayed and collapsed downward. Paul's pupils suddenly shrank, and he caught me in his arms.
"How could this happen!"
"The treatment center should still have vaccines. I'll take you there!"
My eyes stung with tears:
"There are no vaccines left."
"I'll go apply for a rescue plane right now and take you back home for treatment."
"Honey, don't fall asleep. We're going home right now!"
He had always been so composed, yet right now, the arms holding me were trembling, his eyes filled with anxiety.
Suddenly, my tears rolled down uncontrollably.
Shortly after we got married, I was dispatched to a mountainous region to work as a relief doctor.
Harsh lands breed unruly men.
A few old bachelors harassed me repeatedly after discovering I was all alone in the mountains.
