I smelled the rot of my own body; it turns out the soul and spirit retain their senses after death.
The coffin had been washed back to shore by the waves, half-buried in the sand.
I looked inside; my dead body lay with legs stiff, arms still frozen in the motion of trying to push open the lid.
My face was hideously twisted, bloated and deformed by the seawater, bearing no resemblance to how I looked in life.
Today is my 7th-day memorial service.
Seven days ago, Lucas ordered his men to lock me inside this coffin.
"Lucas, are you crazy? I am your wife!"
I screamed and struggled, but was still stuffed into the coffin by his two subordinates.
"Lucas, snap out of it! Do you know what you're doing? This is murder!"
Alex rushed up, trying to save me.
Though he was Lucas's subordinate, they had grown up together since their teens and were more like brothers; Alex always called Lucas by his first name, rather than "Lucas."
"I'm warning you! Say one more word, and I'll seal you in this coffin too."
He ordered his men to tie Alex up and toss him into the corner like a sack of rotting meat.
I fought desperately to crawl out of the coffin.
I had claustrophobia, and Lucas knew it; locking me in this coffin was no different than killing me.
Lucas grabbed a hammer and smashed it down on my fingers, which were gripping the edge of the coffin!
"Ah!"
In an instant, two of my finger joints shattered, and a piercing pain shot through me.
I curled into a ball inside the coffin.
The lid was placed over me, and I heard the sound of nails being driven in.
I closed my eyes in despair.
Outside the coffin, I heard Alex screaming desperately.
"Lucas, you're not human! You're a beast! A dog! A dung beetle!"
I lost all concept of time as immense terror instantly engulfed me.
I kicked and pushed with my hands, trying to open the lid.
But the space was too cramped; I couldn't get any leverage.
I cried out for help while clawing frantically at the coffin lid with my fingernails.
Blood dripped, drop by drop, onto my face and body.
I couldn't even feel the pain of my fingernails tearing off anymore.
"Mr. Harrington, what should we do with the coffin containing the Madam?"
"Drill a few air holes in the side, then transport the coffin to my abandoned house by the sea. Go after midnight."
"And one more thing: from now on, everyone drops what they're doing. Focus all your efforts on searching the seaside for the Young Miss. Scour the shore, hire boats, hire divers – search the ocean, too."
Lucas pulled a photograph from his breast pocket; it was a picture of my sister, Chloe.
A few days ago, Chloe had thrown herself into the sea to commit suicide.
Since then, Lucas had vented all his grief and rage on me.
My sister had left a suicide note claiming she had lost the courage to live because I refused to donate my bone marrow to her.
When Lucas heard of the suicide, he was heartbroken – and furious. In his rage, he locked me inside a coffin.
He told me that I wouldn't be released until my sister's body was found.
If she was truly lost to the ocean forever, he would take my life as a sacrificial burial.
Three days had passed. Aside from breathing, I no longer had the strength to move.
Every now and then, Lucas's men would come to check if I was still alive.
From their conversations, I knew that Lucas's only concern was whether my sister had been recovered; he didn't care whether I lived or died.
