She Loved In Silence Left In Silence Chapter 01

Six years into my secret relationship with my childhood friend Enzo, he dumped me off a cliff.
A month later, my mom was gossiping about him, and she couldn't resist twisting the knife. "He's about to be a father, you know. And you've never even held a man's hand."
"Maybe if I'd given birth to you a little smarter, a little prettier, he might've actually noticed you."
I kept scrolling on my phone and muttered, "Yeah, well. He's way out of my league."
I still remembered that day. Lying in a hospital bed with my leg in a cast, I'd thrown the breakup at him in a fit of fury. He hadn't tried to stop me. He'd just laughed, low and cold.
"Whatever. The women chasing me are all better than you anyway. The real question is—who's going to want you, after me?"
---
Hearing me run myself down, Enzo's mother Rosalba immediately put on her warmest smile.
"Out of your league? Don't be silly. If you two ended up together, I'd be over the moon!" She shook her head. "Enzo's such a closed-off boy. He's never once mentioned a girlfriend to me."
Rosalba scooted closer to me on the couch, lowering her voice like we were conspiring. "Vera, you two are close. Has he ever talked to you about this girlfriend of his?"
I shook my head. "We don't really keep in touch."
It wasn't even a lie.
In the month since we'd broken up, Enzo hadn't reached out a single time.
Rosalba turned to my mother and sighed. "Daughters really are easier. Sons are nothing but trouble. If I hadn't caught him grinning like an idiot at his phone—and accidentally seen that ultrasound photo—I wouldn't even know I was about to be a grandmother."
My mom rinsed a plate of strawberries and set it in front of Rosalba. "Oh, Enzo's been sharp as a tack since he was a kid. He knows what he's doing—don't worry about him. It's mine I'm worried about. She refuses to date anyone. I'm losing my mind over here."
Rosalba beamed. "Just two days ago, someone tried to set him up with a girl. Apparently her father's getting transferred to the Rome headquarters this year. Thank God I didn't agree—that would've been so awkward, wouldn't it?"
I stared at my phone for a long time, trying to remember who I'd been about to text back.
My mom kicked my foot. "Doorbell's been ringing forever. Are you going to get it or not?"
I dragged myself to the door, still half spaced-out.
Enzo was standing on the porch, head tilted down at his phone, a faint smile pulling at the corner of his mouth. The screen went dark a half-second later, but I'd already seen the chat pinned at the top.
A pink profile picture.
Not me. Obviously not me. Since the breakup, my profile picture had been pure black.
"I'm here to pick up my mom," Enzo said flatly.
He didn't have to explain. I already knew he wasn't here for me.
I stepped aside.
"I'm not coming in. We're leaving in a minute."
I looked up and met his eyes—and he looked at me like I was a stranger.
A month ago, this man had been whispering in my ear in bed. He'd cooled off this fast.
I started to turn, but he suddenly grabbed my hand and pressed a paper bag into my palm.
"Take these. Better calcium absorption rate. Pair them with vitamin D."
"Don't you have a 'job' to fly out for today? How'd you find time to come pick me up? It's a five-minute walk—was that really necessary?" Rosalba's voice came drifting in. I yanked my hand back fast.
He didn't flinch. Smoothly, he tucked the paper bag behind his back. "Got cancelled last minute. Figured I'd swing by since I had time. There's been some small-scale infighting in the family lately."
My mom came up behind me, chatting away as she walked Rosalba toward the garden. Enzo stood off to the side, waiting in silence.
That's when Rosalba spotted the pin on the lapel of his suit.
"Oh, that's a unique little pin."
"An old classmate gave it to me."
"A woman?"
"Yeah. She's a personal assistant for the Corleones. Ran into her at the airport when I landed yesterday."
It clicked instantly. The pink profile picture pinned at the top of his messages—that was Michela, the it-girl from our high school class. The Corleones' daughter.
Six years of dating, and I'd given Enzo watches, belts, ties. He'd never used a single one of them. Every time I asked, he said he was saving them for special occasions. I knew the truth. He didn't want anyone knowing he had a girlfriend.
But Michela's pin? On his lapel the very next day.
How desperate was he to broadcast his new relationship to the entire world?
