What About Me Maxton? Chapter 01

I woke up in my childhood friend Maxton Castillo's bed just as his first love, Meredith Wilson, called.
She chirped, "I'm coming back home. Don't tell Maxton, okay? I wanna surprise him!"
The call woke Maxton. He rolled over and pressed a kiss against me.
I gasped for breath and asked, "If Meredith comes back, what happens to us?"
He hesitated for a beat, then grinned carelessly. "We're done, obviously.
"Why you gotta ask something so stupid?"
After saying that, Maxton's hand slid under my shirt. He knew exactly what he was doing.
But even after a long while, I didn't respond.
He finally sensed that something was wrong. He pulled back and leaned against the headboard.
His bare abs were chiseled, a cigarette dangling lazily from his lips.
He asked, "What's with the mood? You always love this."
I looked up at him in disbelief.
He had a body everyone called perfect, a face so sharply sculpted every feature was flawless. The worst part? Those eyes could hook anyone.
I'd been sleeping with a guy like him for two years, and I'd loved every second of it.
But it was time to end it.
I jumped out of bed and pulled on my pants. "I'm done with this. Let's call it quits."
Maxton clamped the unlit cigarette between his teeth, the filter bending under the pressure. "Are you being serious?"
I replied, "Yeah. I'll move my stuff out today."
He tossed the cigarette into the bin. "Fine. I told you before that you can call it off anytime."
He opened a drawer and took out an elegant little box. Then, he walked over and pressed close behind me.
"I picked these earrings up on my business trip the other day.
"Try 'em on. Consider it a breakup present."
He nipped my earlobe between his teeth, warm breath fanning the back of my neck.
I instinctively pulled away. "No, thanks.
"That's Meredith's favorite brand. Honestly, I never liked it anyway."
Maxton and I had been neighbors since we were kids.
He had every girl wrapped around his finger, but the only one he ever loved was Meredith.
And I was the errand girl who ran between them.
"Sammy, go help me cheer Merrie up. I'll reward you if you succeed."
"Sammy, can you ask Maxie not to be mad at me?"
People who are loved always act like they have nothing to lose.
After graduating from college, Meredith insisted on going abroad to study. It sparked the biggest fight they'd ever had.
With red eyes, Maxton said, "Meredith, don't think I can't survive without you.
"If you leave, we're done."
The day she left, I went to see her off.
She hugged my shoulders and said goodbye. "Take good care of Maxton for me.
"He's all bark, no bite.
"He's hiding behind that pillar at your two o'clock."
She laughed, "This breakup's just temporary. We'll get married when I come home.
"And when that happens, you have to be my bridesmaid."
Later, Maxton really did wait for her for two years. But all he got was news that Meredith was staying abroad to study, no set return date.
So Maxton said they were done for good. That night, he got drunk.
My family had been pestering me to go on blind dates, and I was in a foul mood.
He pulled me into a hug and cried. In a fit of anger, I slept with him.
"Maxton, how come you never even looked at me?"
I sat on top of him and slapped his face. "What's so wrong with me that you don't choose me over Meredith?
"Who do you think you are to treat me like this?"
Maxton's eyes glazed over, stunned by the slap. He moved clumsily, pure instinct taking over.
The next morning, I shifted the blame to him. "You forced me. That handprint on your face is proof."
For once, the man who had everything under control looked utterly lost.
After a long time, he murmured, "I must've thought you were Merrie. That's the only reason..."
I slapped him again and slammed the door on my way out.
We ignored each other for two weeks.
Until one night at a cocktail party, when some guy started hitting on me.
Maxton draped his suit jacket over me and carried me to the car. I was still shaken.
He leaned in to kiss me.
I cried and turned away. "Maxton, look at me. I'm not Meredith."
He said softly, "I know.
"Samantha, I wanna kiss you."
I loved him too much.
I loved him too much. I'd loved him for years, so the second he gave me even a little affection, I lost all control.
I would've given up everything for him in a heartbeat.
That night, we kissed from the car all the way to the bed.
After that, I started hanging out at his place more often. Eventually, I just moved in.
He kissed me gently and said, "Sammy, you can end this whenever you want."
I knew he had always been waiting for Meredith, so I never asked what we were to each other.
But those words already told me everything I needed to know.
