I Deleted The Man And Our Future Chapter 01

When Leonardo called, I was at the vet’s with Brutus.
Brutus was a 14-year-old orange tabby. He was slower now, but he still rubbed my hand during the exam.
Leonardo sounded as calm as ever. He asked if I was home.
Before I could answer, he added, “The work trip meeting got moved. I need an extra file. Lauren lives close by, so she’s gonna swing by to pick it up.”
Lauren was his grad school junior. After graduation, she’d joined his architecture firm. And since they were on the same page with design, he obviously valued her a lot.
I froze for a second and looked down at Brutus, who was nudging my palm for attention.
The housekeeper wasn’t home right now. I hesitated, then said, “I’ll drive back. Give me 20 minutes.”
Leonardo didn’t even ask where I was. He just thanked me and hung up.
When I left, Brutus stared at me. The way he looked at me made my chest ache with guilt.
I petted his head and cooed, “Baby, Dad needs an urgent file. I gotta run. I’ll bring you a treat when I get back, okay?”
When I got there, Lauren was already waiting outside. She had on a white knitted dress, looking young and fresh. She didn’t even say hi when she saw me. She just said, “Hurry up and open the door!”
I felt a little weird about it, but since it was urgent, I scanned my fingerprint to unlock the door.
As soon as the door opened, Lauren bolted for the stairs and ran down to the basement study.
She was going so fast that she knocked over the vase of white roses I’d just put by the front door.
The glass vase shattered on the floor, and petals floated in the water.
The faint flower smell hung in the air, and I couldn’t bring myself to ask about the file.
The whole basement was Leonardo’s study.
In three years of marriage, he never let me in there.
They used layered lighting in the basement to let in natural light. Smart design.
Standing in the doorway, I noticed how bright it was inside—and how many plants filled the space.
Lauren was on a video call. She dug through the floor-to-ceiling shelves all panicked, asking every time, “Is this the one, Leon?”
“No. Lauren, when are you gonna get rid of that impatience?” Leonardo said, sounding helpless. “I told you already. Fifth row. Fourth cubby from the left.”
“It’s not here!” She flipped the camera, saw me, and lit up. “Georgina, you must know where it is. Help me look!”
The air suddenly felt so empty it was suffocating. I looked back at her expectant face.
After a long pause, my voice came out hoarse. “Sorry—I don’t know.”
Lauren’s face looked weird. She turned to the desk and started searching again, messing up the neat surface.
Leonardo’s voice came through the phone, a little distorted. “You still have the same bad habits. Mr. Pacheco really spoiled you.”
Lauren giggled, then suddenly said, “Found the first draft! This’ll work. I’m on my way!”
The call ended. She grabbed the file and took off. She was in such a hurry that she bumped my shoulder when she walked by.
I was pushed hard against the door out of nowhere, and pain shot through my back. Her voice trailed down the hall. “Sorry, Georgina!”
I stood there quiet for a second, waiting for the pain to ease up. Then I slid down onto the carpet, totally drained.
The clock’s ticking echoed in the quiet room. It felt like I sat there forever—or maybe just a few seconds.
I pulled out my phone and texted Leonardo: “Let’s get divorced.”
He didn’t reply right away. I was used to that. I took him off my pinned chats.
