His Pawn His Rival’s Queen Chapter 01
Lorenzo Shaw had kept me by his side for six years, and I got away with everything thanks to his influence.
When others asked about me, he'd always smile indulgently and say, "She's my girl, the one I raised myself."
Everyone was convinced he'd marry me.
That day, outside his study, I accidentally overheard him say, "Korbin has his eye on Tia."
His best friend Emmett Tupper was indignant. "That old man even dares to covet your girl?
"Enzo, everyone in New York knows she's your sweetheart.
"Do you want me to handle it?"
After a long pause, Lorenzo spoke, "I was thinking of having Korbin trade the East End plot for her, or the office tower in the financial district. What would you say?"
"Enzo, what are you talking about?"
Emmett sounded as confused as I felt. "You're giving Tiana to that old man?"
Lorenzo lit a cigarette, his tone casual. "Not giving. An equivalent exchange."
Every word cut into me, clear and precise. I dug my nails into my thigh and leaned against the wall to keep standing.
The study fell silent for a few seconds.
Then, understanding dawned on Emmett, and his voice brimmed with admiration. "Enzo, you really had me fooled all these years. I thought you were nothing but a lovesick fool..."
Over the years, plenty of business partners had tried to curry favor with Lorenzo by sending women to his room.
Yet, he never even batted an eye, deflecting them with the same line every time.
"My girl has a jealous streak. I wouldn't dare to mess with her."
Just like that, "Lorenzo is a lovesick fool" became an open secret, and no one dared try again.
The partners who'd struck out immediately switched tactics, bending over backward to win me over instead.
"I love Tiana."
Lorenzo tapped ash from his cigarette, his tone carrying a kind of brutal honesty. "But a businessman's priority is always profit."
Emmett said half-jokingly, "Enzo, if you can give her away, it just means you don't love her enough."
Lorenzo said nothing.
"Korbin won't last long anyway. Tiana would only have to put up with it for a few days, then she'd come back. But..."
Emmett paused deliberately, a flicker of disgust crossing his face. "Once she gets off that old man's bed, she'll be used up.
"You really want her back after she's been passed around?"
The study fell into dead silence.
Finally, Lorenzo spoke, his voice light and dismissive. "We'll see when we get there."
Six years ago, if not for my father defying all opposition to invest in Lorenzo's project, he'd never have gotten where he was today.
After my parents died, my relatives stole the company and tried to sell me off to the nightclub.
Lorenzo showed up just in time and took me away.
For six years, he was the only warmth I had after my parents. He took care of everything—where I lived, what I ate, how I spent my days.
Over time, I grew dependent on him, unable to survive without him.
I'd been with him since I turned eighteen.
It never crossed my mind that one day he'd use me as a bargaining chip.
"By the way," Emmett suddenly changed the subject, "Easton seems to be back from Europe. I heard he's marrying the Webster family heiress. He was checking out wedding venues at the hotel a few days ago."
Easton Duncan, Korbin Duncan's son, was Lorenzo's archrival in business.
Four years ago, Easton snatched the CBD project in the east of the city by raising the bid by 50 million. Then, through underhanded means, he nearly broke Lorenzo's company's capital chain.
It only stopped two years ago when Easton was sent by Korbin to Europe to develop new markets.
No one expected this troublemaker to have returned.
Lorenzo let out a low laugh, a flicker of satisfaction in his eyes.
"Interesting. Korbin and his son will both get a woman.
"I can't wait to see the look on Easton's face when he finds out Tiana is his dad's side piece."
