Hired By My Own Son Chapter 01

At the age of 25, I had a child for Daxton Gredwell, the heir to New York's most elite family.
Knowing that we came from two different worlds and there was no future for us, I took the money and connections the Gredwell family offered and walked away.
Five years went by. Then, during a break on set, a little boy who looked exactly like Daxton found me.
He stood there pouting, looking both wounded and defiant.
"My dad is Daxton," he said. "And you're my mom."
I looked down at him and gave a faint, "Mm-hmm."
He quickly pulled a thick stack of cash from his backpack and held it out to me.
His eyes were full of pleading as he said, "I'm hiring you for a day to attend my parent-teacher meeting. Okay?"

I froze, staring at the little boy holding the cash.
I pressed my lips together and gently pushed the money back toward him.
"I don't want your money."
His eyes welled up instantly. He lowered his head, his voice trailing off into a whisper.
"Grandma said you love money more than anything. So I saved up for a long time before I came to find you.
"All the kids at school say I'm a stray with no mother. But I always tell them I do have a mom, and my mom is a famous celebrity.
"They keep calling me a liar.
"Even if you don't want me anymore, I wasn't lying.
"But they just won't believe me."
He hung his head, his small frame trembling with quiet sobs as he wiped his tears away with his sleeve.
I squatted down, tilting his face up to mine as I brushed away his tears.
"I don't want your money, but I'll go with you."
His head snapped up, his eyes shining.
He looked incredulous, but a look of pure, unhidden joy spread across his face.
In an instant, he threw himself into my arms.
He buried his head in the crook of my neck and let out a loud, heavy sob.
It was as if he had been holding back a lifetime of suffering.
I patted his back gently, trying to soothe him.
When he finally finished his cry, he looked me in the eyes.
He flushed, his gaze darting away shyly. He turned his head with an awkward, sheepish expression and tried to explain himself.
"I'm not a crybaby. I'm a big boy.
"I just couldn't hold it back."
Seeing him like this, I smiled and shook my head. "It's okay. I don't judge you for it."
He pursed his lips into a smile, grabbed my hand, and introduced himself eagerly.
"My name is Corbin Gredwell. My nickname is Corby. You can call me Corby."
I smiled and brushed his bangs aside. "I know."
He nodded, his round eyes sparkling. "You know my name?"
"I do," I confirmed again with a nod.
The name Corbin had been given to him by Daxton's father, but I was the one who had chosen the nickname, Corby.
How could I not know?
