Leaving You In Five Days Chapter 01

As the most promising young surgeon in the military, Wylder Whaklam saved countless lives.
Tons of women threw themselves at him, yet none of them ever moved his heart.
Things began to change when Daniella Mitchmore stepped into his life—like the first light of dawn breaking into a world he had long kept closed off.
Before long, she became the one closest to him.
Despite having no medical training, Daniella taught herself everything from scratch, passing every exam to become his devoted medical assistant.
She'd hiked up 20 km alongside Wylder to help with difficult births in the neighboring village.
She even paid out of her own pocket so Wylder could transport critically ill elderly patients to city hospitals for life-saving surgery.
She also traveled with him into remote areas to gather basic medical supplies and prepare low-cost treatments for families who couldn't afford proper care.
As they grew more attuned to each other, Daniella finally saw herself earn a place in Wylder's heart.
Under the bright sun that day, Wylder looked down and said softly, "Ella, I want to get married.
"If you're willing, I'll go register it right now.
"But I know being with a doctor might be very hard on you."
Daniella had never been happier. In that moment, she silently vowed to become the most beautiful bride.
Yet that joy lasted only three months.
On their wedding day, a roof beam suddenly buckled and came crashing down toward Daniella.
Caught off guard, she couldn't move in time. She could only watch as Wylder dashed frantically toward the guest seats.
In the moment her mother shielded her, pinning her tightly to the ground, Daniella caught a glimpse of Wylder through the chaos. He was holding a delicate figure firmly in his arms.
Dust swirled, and the air grew thick with the smell of blood.
Daniella was soaked in her mother's blood from head to toe.
In a panic, she cried out and begged Wylder, "Please save my mom!
"She's the only family I have left."
But as tears blurred her vision, she felt herself being roughly shoved away.
Without the slightest hesitation, Wylder pushed Daniella aside. "Ella, we're short on hands. There are patients far worse off than her waiting for me.
"I cannot prioritize my own family over my duty."
Daniella stood there, stunned.
Her mother was clearly the most critically injured person in the entire disaster.
Using every bit of medical knowledge she had gathered over the years, Daniella desperately performed first aid, all the while sobbing and pleading for Wylder to help.
However, that tall, familiar figure just ran into the crowd without even a backward glance.
At the very moment, her mother drew her final breath amidst Daniella's wails.
Daniella saw it with her own eyes. Wylder was carefully bandaging a tiny cut on the palm of a young woman.
That woman was Thalia Rotham—Wylder's childhood friend and unrequited love.
She was the reason Wylder had kept all other women at a distance and remained single for so many years.
He had even stood against the entire world for her.
Years ago, Thalia had left him when he was nothing more than a poor medical student. She had called him worthless and walked away to marry a wealthy local businessman.
And all these years later, even after grueling, back-to-back surgeries, Wylder would still murmur her name in his sleep.
Daniella had held onto the hope that if she stayed by his side long enough, he would eventually appreciate her devotion and finally let go of the past.
But now, she could only swallow the overwhelming bitterness as she tried desperately to keep her mother's cooling body warm.
Seven days passed.
The voices around her had shifted from wedding congratulations to somber words of condolence.
And Wylder had yet to return.
In front of her mother's black-and-white funeral portrait, Daniella cried her eyes out.
After finally laying her mother to rest, she rushed out of the house like a woman possessed.
Daniella arrived at the edge of a run-down neighborhood.
Following the recent urban redevelopment, only one holdout house remained.
It was the home of Thalia.
Daniella had come seeking justice for herself and her mother.
But when she saw what was happening inside through a gap in the worn window, her legs suddenly felt as heavy as lead.
It was all so unfamiliar.
In those few minutes, Daniella felt as if she were seeing a version of Wylder she had never known.
His usual coldness had vanished as he patiently taught Thalia how to identify medicinal herbs.
He even chopped firewood and cooked for her with the very same hands he used to hold a scalpel.
And when the debt collectors arrive at the door, Wylder's face darkened instantly. "I'll pay her debt...
"So watch your mouth."
Daniella had stood by Wylder's side while he saved countless lives with his own two hands.
But this was the first time she had seen him cast aside his pride and dignity so completely.
With bloodshot, fierce eyes, he looked ready to tear those guys apart.
All to defend Thalia.
Wylder single-handedly overpowered ten men with absolute dominance.
But in a moment when his guard was down, one of them swung a wooden club and struck the bone in his hand.
A sharp crack echoed through the air.
Even from a distance, Daniella's heart skipped a beat in terror.
That was his left hand, the hand he prized as a doctor and valued more than his own life.
Yet even as cold sweat broke out on his forehead from the agony, Wylder turned only to comfort Thalia beside him, "I'm fine.
"It doesn't hurt."
Hearing those words, Daniella suddenly realized she had nothing left to ask.
No matter what his answer was, it would only humiliate her further.
In Wylder's eyes, the rest of the world paled beside Thalia.
Neither she nor her mother was an exception to that rule.
In that instant, all her love vanished, and her tears finally ran dry.
She dragged herself to her supervisor, Colten Obray's office. "Mr. Obray, about Wylder filing the paperwork to update our marital status...please tell them to stop the process. I'm withdrawing my name.
"Also, that volunteer program you mentioned last time...the one for rebuilding Alaska. I would like to join."
Colten looked stunned. "Daniella, Dr. Whaklam is one of the kindest men I've ever met. Are you really sure about this?"
"I am."
Daniella knew she could never marry a man who had no place for her in his heart.
Her mother had given her life to make her see that truth clearly.
She refused to let that sacrifice be in vain.
"The bus for the volunteers leaves for Alaska in five days. Either way, Daniella, welcome aboard."
For the first time since her wedding day, a faint smile finally touched Daniella's lips.
In just five days, she would be able to say a final goodbye to Wylder.
There was no regret—only resolve.
