Be My Husband? Too Late. Chapter 01
My husband, Sebastian Caldwell, didn't love me. And he certainly didn't love our son, Xavier Caldwell.
When Xavier was born, Sebastian didn't even look at him. He simply placed the baby in my arms and walked away.
Later, Caitlin Lynch—the woman he was still obsessed with—came back to the country.
For the first time, he—always cold and distant—got completely drunk at home. Smiling, he scooped Xavier up into his arms.
Xavier wrapped his arms around Sebastian's neck in surprised delight. Once he got down, he whispered, "Mom, is there something wrong with Mr. Caldwell?"
I crouched down and pulled him into my arms. My eyes burned as I explained, "The woman he loves is b]ack. It's time we stayed out of his life. We're moving out."
After putting Xavier to bed, I returned to the guest room, opened my laptop, and started drafting a divorce agreement.
This year marked the seventh year of my marriage to Sebastian.
It was also the seventh year we had been sleeping in separate rooms.
Now, I was finally ready to let him go.
There was a knock on the door.
The door opened, and the seven-year-old Xavier walked in, holding a model airplane.
"Mom, are we really moving out?"
He looked at me, his eyes full of reluctance.
"But Mr. Caldwell hugged me tonight. Does that mean he's starting to like me?"
I froze, momentarily dazed.
In all seven years, Sebastian had never let Xavier call him "Dad."
When Xavier was two, Sebastian took him to the supermarket. On the way, they ran into someone Sebastian knew.
Just because Xavier accidentally called him "Dad," Sebastian put the newly-walking boy down and made him struggle all the way home by himself.
Xavier fell again and again, and by the time they got home, his knees and palms were scraped raw.
When Xavier was four, he begged for a long time before Sebastian finally agreed to take him to an amusement park.
The word "Dad" slipped out of him again, and Sebastian tore his hand away at once, leaving his own son stranded and alone in the crowd.
When I finally found my poor boy, he was hiding in a bush, crying so hard he could barely breathe.
After that, Xavier started calling him "Mr. Caldwell," and our so‑called family turned into a hollow shell of what it was meant to be.
Those memories put a lump in my throat. I pulled Xavier tightly into my arms.
"Xavi, the woman Mr. Caldwell loves is coming back. We can't stay in this house anymore."
Xavier's eyes dimmed. Then, he lifted the model airplane in front of me.
"But Mom, he gave me this tonight. If he doesn't like me, why would he give me a present?"
His expression was so eager. He was desperate to show that Sebastian loved him.
I opened my mouth, but no words came out.
What was I supposed to say?
Was I supposed to tell him that Sebastian was happy because Caitlin was returning?
Or that the gift only existed because of her?
"Xavi, if I want to take you away from him, would you come with me?"
Xavier's body stiffened. Then, he whispered, "Can we not leave?
"I've never...openly called him Dad..."
My tears finally fell. I bit my lip and said, "Xavi, Mr. Caldwell...doesn't want us in his home...
"Let's get away together, just the two of us, okay?"
Xavier pulled back, clutching the airplane tightly. After a long silence, he said, "I want to give him three more chances. If he still...doesn't like us, we'll leave forever."
I closed my eyes and agreed. "Okay."
I thought, "Sebastian, Xavier and I will give you three chances.
"If you let us down, you'll no longer have a place in our lives."
Today was Friday—the day Caitlin came back.
She and Sebastian started dating in college and got engaged after graduation.
However, one month before the wedding, she fell in love with a French man at first sight.
She left Sebastian without hesitation and went to France to pursue that man.
From then on, the two of them went their own separate ways.
Sebastian was stuck in a downward spiral for a long time.
That was when I became his assistant.
One night, after he got drunk, we crossed a line, and I ended up pregnant.
