Died During My Sleep Chapter 01

Rosanna's POV

On my twenty-fourth birthday, I was diagnosed with the gentlest terminal illness imaginable—narcolepsy. I would probably die in my sleep, feeling no pain at all.
Holding the diagnosis in my hands, I stood beneath the Christmas tree and made a wish: I hoped that my twin sister, Tamara Lambeth, and my boyfriend, Lloyd Norbury, would be safe and happy forever.
Then, in the very next second, I saw them kissing through tears behind the tree.
Lloyd's voice was low, thick with restrained emotion. "Tamara, you're the one I love. How long are you going to keep pretending you don't know that?"
Tamara's eyes were brimming with tears, her face twisted with pain. "We can't be together!"
"Why? Just because I'm Rosanna's boyfriend?
"I only pursued her to get close to you!"
Lloyd's words came out in a raw growl.
My pupils shrank. A loud ringing filled my head, and I nearly lost my footing.

Tamara slapped Lloyd across the face.
"Shut up! Don't ever say something like that again. If Rosie hears you, I'll—"
Before she could finish, Lloyd pulled her into his arms.
His face held a tenderness and heartbreak I had never once seen directed at me.
"I promise, all right? Don't curse yourself like that. It hurts me to hear it.
"Tammy, I know you love Rosie and you'd sacrifice anything for her. But she's not a child anymore. She can't stay under your wing forever.
" Have you ever thought about how much easier your life would be if she wasn't dragging you down?"
Tamara was silent for a long time. When she finally spoke, her voice was so faint I could barely hear it. "I have."
It felt as if a blade had pierced straight through my heart, leaving me in such agony I could barely breathe.
The truth was, I had always known I was a burden to Tamara.
But hearing her admit, with my own ears, that she wished I were gone still hurt more than I could bear.
When we were seven, our biological parents came to the orphanage to take us home.
But they were only willing to accept Tamara—because I had been born with a heart condition.
Tamara had been so furious that her eyes turned red.
She grabbed a broom taller than she was and literally chased them out with it.
"If you don't want Rosie, I do!
"I'll raise her strong and healthy, and one day, you'll both regret this!"
Most promises made by children are easily broken.
But Tamara was different.
From the age of seven until twenty-four, she had always protected me.
To send me to a good school, she began working when she was only sixteen.
Terrified that my heart condition might flare up again and we wouldn't be able to afford the treatment, she never dared take even a single day off, all so she could save a little more money for my medical bills.
Because of that, even though we were the same age, Tamara looked five or six years older than I did.
Yet now, my strong, capable sister was showing a fragile and helpless side of herself in Lloyd's arms.
As I stared at them, tears rolled down my face in heavy drops, but the corners of my lips slowly lifted into a smile.
I lifted my frozen hands, pressed my palms together, and made my wish again.
"I wish Tamara and Lloyd could live happily ever after as husband and wife."
