The Price Of His Loyalty Chapter 01
When Olivia Bright was having a miscarriage and desperately needed a family member's signature, her husband, Julian Sterling, was accompanying his savior, Chloe Bennett, for a CT scan.
Ever since then, Olivia, who had always compromised for love, seemed like an entirely different person.
In the heir of the Sterling family past, whenever Chloe had a headache, Olivia would remember the life-saving grace, book the most expensive private hospital, and accompany her the entire time.
Now, she simply bought half the shares of that hospital and issued an order to deny service to Chloe alone.
In the past, when Julian spent lavishly on Chloe, she would lower her eyes and silently permit this "repayment of gratitude."
Now, she tracked down every single penny Julian had given to Chloe and filed a lawsuit to recover it all.
In the past, even when she felt wronged, she would still consider Julian's father feelings, terrified of putting him in a difficult position.
Now, she made a grand spectacle of openly opposing him.
She drove up the bids on the land he wanted; she undercut profits to snatch the projects he favored; she even hijacked the board meeting he was chairing to project a massive image of him tenderly holding Chloe onto the main screen.
......
The projection froze on Chloe in Julian's arms, her teary voice echoing: "Julian, I'm so scared..."
A dead silence fell over the conference room.
Julian's face darkened, his voice dripping with ice: "Everyone, get out."
The door clicked shut, leaving only Julian and Olivia in the room.
Olivia didn't even look at him. She unhurriedly turned off the projector, grabbed her flash drive, and turned to leave.
"Olivia." His voice was thick with suppressed hostility. "Are you done making a scene?"
Only then did Olivia tilt her head, spitting out two words: "Not yet."
Those two light words completely ignited the fury Julian had been suppressing for days.
He grabbed her wrist and pinned her against the edge of the conference table.
"You've been opposing me at every turn lately, and I've tolerated it." He lowered his head. "But you shouldn't have dragged Chloe into this, let alone made such a joke in front of the entire company just to humiliate us. What exactly are you trying to do?"
Olivia looked as if she had just heard a hilarious joke.
"What am I trying to do?" She forcefully wrenched her hand free. "Julian, when I was lying on that operating table waiting for a signature, the whole of Lunaton was laughing at me. Do you think I wasn't humiliated?"
"I already explained that to you." Julian growled, reaching out to lift her chin, but she dodged his touch.
His hand froze in mid-air before dropping back down. His tone softened slightly, yet still carried an unquestionable arrogance: "Chloe injured her head to save me back then and lost her memory. Her old injury flared up that day, and she was in agonizing pain. She has no one to rely on in Lunaton; I couldn't just leave her."
Always the same excuse.
His debt of gratitude was greater than their marriage, greater than the life of their unborn child.
"Right, you couldn't just leave her." Olivia shoved him away fiercely. "So every time she has a headache, feels anxious, or can't sleep, it's always more important than anything happening to me."
"Olivia!" Julian's temper flared, stung by her biting sarcasm. "You're still holding a grudge against me over that child, aren't you?"
"I admit I shouldn't have left you. But I also promised you that once you recover, we'll have another child. This has nothing to do with Chloe, so stop taking your anger out on her."
Olivia's mother father father voice suddenly spiked: "The child we prayed for for two years—is it really that trivial to you? You think a simple 'we'll have another' just brushes it all away?"
Tears welled in her eyes, but she bit her lower lip hard, forcefully holding them back.
"If you want a child, go find Chloe!"
Julian gripped her shoulders fiercely. "Say that again?"
She met his furious gaze without an ounce of fear: "I said—let, Chloe, Bennett, give..."
Before she could finish, Julian hoisted her onto the conference table, pinned her wrists, tore off her coat, and pressed his lips to the side of her neck.
"Didn't you want a child?" His lips crashed down. "I'll give you one right now."
An unprecedented wave of humiliation washed over Olivia.
She struggled fiercely and drove her knee up. While he recoiled in pain, her fingers brushed against a folder on the desk; she grabbed it and smashed it viciously against his neck and shoulder.
A sharp pain flared across Julian's neck. He raised a hand to cover his neck, which instantly began to bleed.
Olivia broke free, panting heavily. She pulled a divorce agreement from a document bag and slapped it onto the table.
Just like the previous ninety-nine times, Julian tore it to shreds without even glancing at it.
He looked at her, his eyes swirling with complex emotions—anger, disappointment, hurt...
"Olivia, you've really got some nerve now."
Just then, a custom ringtone chimed from his phone. It was Chloe.
Julian suppressed all his churning emotions.
"Divorce? Don't even think about it!"
He slammed the door and stormed out.
His resolute demeanor was exactly the same as when he had demanded her hand in marriage years ago: "Olivia, I am going to marry you, no matter what!"
Olivia stood frozen, staring at the shredded paper scattered across the floor.
Scalding tears finally slipped down her cheeks, unchecked.
She took out her phone and dialed a number.
"Dad, I want to return to the family."
"Back then, you would rather kneel in the ancestral hall, write ninety-nine pages of the family rules in a blood letter, and fall into a shock-induced coma, all to cut ties with the family and marry Julian." Olivia's sighed deeply. "You know the Bright family's rules. To return, you must roll across a bed of thorns to prove your resolve. In your current condition, I'm afraid your body won't be able to endure it..."
Olivia gripped her phone, her fingertips trembling slightly.
No matter how much it hurt, could it hurt more than being deceived by the man she loved so deeply?
No matter how much it hurt, could it hurt more than the consecutive agony of losing her children?
If she could abandon everything to love him, she could endure anything to leave him.
Her voice was soft, yet exceptionally clear. "I can endure it."
