The Coffee Poured On My Head Chapter 01

The moment he poured the iced Americano over my head for his new assistant,
I knew it was over between us.
He grabbed my arm and asked, “Just because of a cup of coffee?”
I looked at him and said, “Yes. Just because of a cup of coffee.”
-
“Samantha, as your mentor, I’ll leave you with one last lesson. In this industry, you either tough it out or pack your bags.”
Frederick stared down at me, still holding an iced Americano.
A minute earlier, his so-called sister and newly promoted assistant, Eleanor Ortega, had pointed at the design I’d pulled three all-nighters to finish and said sweetly in front of the whole team, “Sammy’s design feels so outdated. It’s like my grandma’s taste. But it’s fine. We can’t expect everyone to keep up with the times, especially at her age.”
The whole room burst out laughing.
Frederick didn’t stop her. Instead, he said calmly, “Eleanor’s blunt, but she’s not wrong. Samantha, your aesthetic really needs an update.”
I’d put up with it for five years. Today, I finally snapped.
I grabbed the warm water next to me and threw it at her before I could think.
The next second, Frederick’s iced Americano came straight at me. The cold coffee soaked my hair, my face, and my clothes.
In that moment, something inside me broke, and everything holding me back snapped.
“I quit, Frederick.”
Icy coffee dripped from my bangs into my eyes. It stung so bad I had to squint.
The whole conference room went dead silent.
Frederick probably hadn’t expected to actually throw it. He stood there with the empty cup frozen mid-air. Surprise flashed across his usually calm face, then quickly turned to anger.
“Samantha, have you lost your mind? This is a top agency, not some street market!”
Eleanor shrieked and rushed over with tissues, carefully wiping his barely damp sleeve. Her voice trembled like she was about to cry. “Freddie, are you okay? How could you throw something at me? I was only giving my opinion…”
I wiped my face and looked at them.
Frederick was the creative director everyone called a genius—and the senior I’d secretly loved for five years.
To follow him, I’d given up the stable job my family had arranged for me. I started as a clueless junior and worked my way up to senior designer.
I thought staying by his side was the best way to show how I felt. I thought if I worked hard enough, I could stand next to him.
But reality slapped me in the face.
“Giving your opinion?” I let out a shaky laugh. “Eleanor, is shrinking the client’s logo to a tiny dot just ‘giving your opinion’? Is changing the main color to blinding pink just ‘giving your opinion’? That’s not an opinion. That’s sabotage.”
“Enough!” Frederick snapped. “Eleanor’s new. If she doesn’t know the ropes, you teach her. Is that your excuse for throwing water? I must’ve gone too easy on you. You’ve forgotten who’s in charge.”
“Too easy on me?” I thought.
For five years, I covered for him at client dinners, pulled countless all-nighters, and revised draft after draft. And this is what I got in return.
I took a deep breath. Suddenly, I couldn’t even stand to look at him.
“You’re right, Frederick.” I stood up straight and even smiled. “Your ‘kindness’ is a luxury I can’t take anymore. If you think someone who can’t even tell Photoshop layers apart is more talented, she can have the lead designer job.”
With that, I ripped off the badge he’d given me myself on my first day five years ago.
I tossed my badge on the table. It landed with a sharp click.
“Goodbye, Mr. Johnston. Good luck to you both. Maybe you’ll run the company straight into the ground together.”
I turned and walked out without looking back. Behind me, he shouted in fury, “Samantha! If you walk out that door today, you can forget about working in advertising ever again!”
I didn’t slow down. I walked even faster.
“Fine then. I won’t. Worst case, I’ll just go home and take over the family business,” I murmured.
