He Became My Cold Protector Chapter 01
My brother, David Keller, was dead set against marriage.
When he was 25, our parents, determined to carry on the family line, decided to have another baby late in life—me.
Mom died in labor, and Dad vanished without a trace.
After that, I was passed back and forth between my aunt, Denise Harper, and my uncle, Vincent Shaw.
By the time I turned seven, every one of my relatives had had enough.
So they filed a lawsuit, demanding that David take responsibility for raising me.
The day the court order came down, I dragged a small suitcase behind me—my movements strained, yet practiced.
My hand trembled as I reached out and grabbed David's arm while he walked out of the courthouse.
He turned back with a frown.
This was the first time in my life that I had met David. His eyes were cold and full of hatred.
There were a lot of people outside the courthouse, and the sky was dark and overcast.
Every so often, someone glanced our way.
David's brow tightened.
With visible impatience, he lowered his eyes to the hand clutching his arm.
A tiny patch of creases appeared on the crisp sleeve of his suit, a mark left by my desperate hand.
My hand shook harder.
Under his warning gaze, I instinctively tried to pull it back in fear.
Behind me, Denise's sharp, irritated voice rang out. "What's with that look on your face?
"David, the court has ruled. You don't get to shirk your responsibilities anymore."
Vincent waved the court order and chimed in self-righteously, "Your parents are gone. As her brother, you're supposed to step in and be a father to her!
"We've been taking care of your sister for seven years, doing what you should have. Now it's your turn!"
I had no other choice, and I couldn't survive on my own.
Terrified, I clung tightly to David's sleeve.
But his expression turned grim, and he violently shoved me away.
His piercing eyes shifted to Denise and Vincent, and when he spoke, his voice was sharp and cutting. "I was thrown out by the Keller family years ago.
"I don't have parents, let alone a sister."
Vincent was struck speechless for a moment.
Denise snapped, furious, "Th-then take it up with the court!
"Jessica's your responsibility now, so don't even think about dumping her back on us!"
I stood frozen where I was, my head bowed, not daring to say a word.
The temperature had dropped, and the wind was strong.
But my face still burned hot with shame.
My clenched hand kept trembling, my palm slick with sweat.
No one wanted me. I knew that.
David shot me another cold glance and let out a mocking laugh.
He seemed completely unwilling to waste another second.
He left me there, walked straight to the car parked not far away, got in, and slammed the door.
The engine started, and the car was just about to pull away.
Denise's expression darkened at once.
She stormed over with Vincent, shoved against me in anger, and screamed, "Why aren't you hurrying up and following him?
"You useless burden! Are you going to keep mooching off your uncle and me?"
The hit sent me sprawling to the ground.
My wrist scraped against the pavement, skin torn open and streaked with blood.
Spots of black danced before my eyes. Ignoring the pain, I scrambled to my feet, driven by sheer panic.
When I looked up again, Denise had already thrown herself in front of David's car. She sprawled across the hood, pounding on it with both hands.
Her voice climbed to a piercing pitch as she broke into a tearful tantrum. "This is unfair! Outrageous!
"He drives a fancy car and makes a fortune, yet he refuses to provide for his own sister, despite the court's decision!"
More and more people turned to look.
Gradually, a crowd began to gather.
Denise's cries grew louder and louder.
Vincent began shouting his complaints to the crowd.
As more people gathered, the noise grew louder and began to disrupt the court.
A judge came out of the courthouse and tried to smooth things over.
Denise and Vincent refused to pay him any attention.
Left with no choice, the judge walked over to David's car and tapped lightly on the window.
At last, the window slid down, revealing David's face twisted with fury.
His hands tightened on the steering wheel, the veins on their backs bulging with tension.
The judge asked tactfully, "Mr. Keller, do you need assistance?"
From the crowd, someone gasped. "Wait...isn't that Dr. Keller, the leading forensic pathologist?"
"He's the one who helped crack that major New York case last month!" someone else added.
"A forensic pathologist that famous must be making a fortune!"
"But...he won't even take care of such a little girl?"
The crowd's hushed whispers mingled with Denise and Vincent's relentless cries.
The anger on David's face faded, and he flushed with embarrassment.
After a long moment, he finally turned his cold gaze on me and said, "Get in."
