Love Rekindled Between Us Chapter 01
Four years into my marriage to my archrival, Cassian Hebert, he got into a car accident and lost his memory. His memory was stuck right before we got married.
When he spotted my wedding ring, his voice dripped with sarcasm.
"Who on earth was unlucky enough to marry you?"
***
I glanced at the bandage on his head and thought to myself, "Buddy, if I told you it was you, I'm pretty sure you'd have a brain hemorrhage."
"Don't worry about it. It wasn't you anyway."
"When did you get married?"
"Four years ago."
"What did I do at the time?"
I smiled sweetly. "You gave me a really generous wedding gift."
He looked down. "That's impossible."
For some reason, his handsome face showed genuine disappointment.
I should have known—even with amnesia, this guy was impossible to fool.
Given our history, there was no way he sent me a wedding gift. He'd have been more likely to spike the food with laxatives just to make my wedding the biggest disaster in history.
Watching him stare off into space, I moved before I could think.
I reached out and pinched his cheek. "Come on. Let's go home."
"Home?" His eyes lit up, as if a flicker of hope had just sparked.
I scrambled to come up with a lie.
"Yeah. Did you know your family's company went under?
"You're basically my servant now."
Cassian, who had been teetering on the edge of falling apart, finally came completely undone.
I committed to the act. I'd already tipped off the household staff, and I'd talked to his parents too.
They agreed to let me run with this for a while, just to keep him resting at home without worrying about business.
So when he was in the car, clinging to his last shred of hope, he called his parents to verify it.
Their answer was: "Cass, we're bankrupt. For real."
He put the phone down. His eyes were red-rimmed. The golden boy, the heir who had everything handed to him, was now officially penniless.
After a long silence, his voice came out low.
"So ... what exactly do I do around your house?"
"Lots of things. Laundry, cooking, fetching drinks. Oh, and you wash my feet too."
He turned his head and stared out the window. His sharp profile, usually so cold and unapproachable, now carried a hint of vulnerability that would make anyone's heart ache.
Anyone looking at him would have thought, "What a heartbreaking sight."
I could barely contain my joy, but I managed not to let it show.
Cassian used to be untouchable, arrogant, and had never bowed to anyone.
He was the golden boy—blessed.
Everything went his way, one success after another.
I once said that if I ever saw Cassian cry over me, it'd probably be at my funeral.
That little comment got back to him.
He smiled and said, "You think too highly of yourself. I'd show up to your funeral with a brass band."
Now, watching him this vulnerable was the most satisfying thing I'd ever experienced.
I held in my laughter all the way home.
