Died When He Didn't Know Chapter 01
I died the day Jason Luther, only nineteen, became the youngest racing champion in history.
When asked what he wanted most after his victory, he, normally so cocky and defiant, suddenly blushed, his ears burning red.
"I want to go to San Francisco. She promised me we'd meet after the SAT."
What he didn't know was that when I made that promise, I was lying in the ICU, hooked up to several machines just to stay alive.
He had no idea I was more than just an online friend hundreds of kilometers away.
I was his classmate—a shadow in the back row, as invisible as the very air he breathed every day in that same room.
***
My heart stopped the day Jason won the championship.
This broken, failing heart finally gave out, bringing my life to an end.
Mom and Dad were stunned for less than a second before calmly beginning to arrange my funeral.
My life meant so little to them—even my brother Tristan Ashford's sneeze drew more concern.
The heart condition I was diagnosed with at birth had exhausted the little affection my family had for me, leaving our relationship completely fractured.
Besides, I was never the child they wanted in the first place.
I was the fourth child, following two sisters and a brother.
When Mom unexpectedly got pregnant again, she had the baby's gender checked—and only after learning it was a boy did she and Dad decide to keep it.
They were utterly disappointed when I was born. My failing heart simply turned me into an even greater burden for the family.
As if to mark my arrival as a mistake, Dad named me Mallory Ashford—which meant "unfortunate."
Over the past 18 years, they'd said "I regret having her" more times than I could count—and never even bothered to hide it from me.
Now, I was finally dead.
As the doctor pronounced me dead, it felt as though an eighteen-year-old error had finally been erased from their lives.
Just like that, on a bright, sunny morning, I quietly left this world.
Yet, my consciousness lingered. It seemed the obsessions I held in life were keeping me tethered to this world.
A wandering spirit, I passed Mom and Dad as they calmly handled the paperwork, then drifted through crowded city streets and quiet, empty hills and rivers.
In the end, I arrived at the roaring, electrified racetrack.
There, I saw Jason at his most unstoppable.
I only ever watched replays of his races after the results were known, terrified that my heart wouldn't be able to handle the intensity of a live broadcast.
So I instinctively looked away.
A few seconds later, I realized something.
I was already dead.
There was no need to worry about whether my heart could take it anymore.
The moment I turned back toward the track, a yellow race car shot across the finish line.
I recognized it instantly. It was Jason's car.
He had won the championship.
The crowd's screams tore through the sky.
