No Longer Us Chapter 01
After miscarriage, I never quarreled with my husband about his mistress.
She was his favorite student.
Because of her, I had fought hysterically with Leroy countless times, even bringing up divorce more than once.
But this time, seeing an earring wedged in his car, I just picked it up and put it in his hand.
"It was snowing earlier, so I gave two students a ride. One of them probably just dropped it by accident." he explained.
"It's fine." I said.
"You really don't care at all?" he asked in stun.
Back when I still cared, all I got in return were endless arguments, a river of tears, and the loss of my unborn child.
Now, I truly didn't care anymore.
I didn't answer Leroy.
When we got home, he stopped me, looking utterly exhausted.
He searched my face with a complex look in his eyes. "Why?"
I smiled and asked softly, "Isn't this what you've always wanted?"
Leroy fell silent for a moment, then explained again, "Lauren is my student. I wasn't just driving her—there was another student with us. Why do you..."
He trailed off, but I already knew what he was trying to say.
Why did I always have to be so suspicious of them?
Realizing he'd misspoken, he sighed helplessly. "I haven't been alone with her. She sat in the front because she gets carsick.
"As I said, she's just my student. There's nothing between us."
I stayed silent.
Leroy's expression shifted slightly, a hint of fatigue and helplessness on his face.
"What am I supposed to do, Serena?"
I met his gaze calmly.
"I don't want you to do anything. Stop trying to explain yourself," I answered.
Thinking of the earring in the car, I added, "Why don't you return it to her now? It's not safe for her to be showing up here in the middle of the night."
Leroy's expression changed.
Lauren had come to our place late at night twice.
The first time, she accidentally left her lab report in Leroy's car. Then, at midnight, she showed up at our door, teary-eyed.
Leroy had to take her home.
Half a month later, I found a lipstick under the passenger seat of his car.
He offered a casual explanation. "It must have just slipped out of Lauren's bag."
He put it away as if it were nothing.
I frowned and suppressed the strange feeling in my chest, choosing not to say anything.
I didn't expect Lauren to come knocking again in the middle of the night.
She held out her hand to him, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. "Professor Marlowe, could I have my lipstick back?"
Leroy took it out of his pocket and handed it to her, saying flatly, "Be more careful with your things next time."
Lauren stuck out her tongue at him playfully. "Got it, Professor."
She flirted with Leroy, freely making her demands.
I froze where I stood.
After she left, Leroy and I got into our first fight.
Finally, he rubbed his temples with his eyes closed. "Serena, don't project your own insecurities onto everyone else.
"Lauren isn't like you. She's brilliant."
Tears clung to my eyelashes as I stared at Leroy in a daze.
He'd said nothing more and turned to leave.
Snapping out of it, I found Leroy staring at me intently.
He seemed to be searching for even the slightest flicker of emotion across my face.
Unfortunately, there was none.
My expression didn't change at all.
As I turned to go upstairs, Leroy's hoarse voice, tinged with expectation, sounded behind me.
"Serena, today is our fifth wedding anniversary, remember?"
