Frozen Love Broken Marriage Chapter 01
On our ninth wedding anniversary, Rowan Keaton and I both picked "Truth" during a game of Truth or Dare.
Egged on by our friends, I shyly admitted that I was first attracted to Rowan because of his looks. Then, I looked at him, expecting to hear sweet words of love in return.
Rowan swirled his glass, his eyes hazy from the alcohol.
"I froze my ex-girlfriend in a liquid nitrogen tank. She died saving me back then."
I stared at Rowan in shock, the smile freezing on my face.
Our friends quickly jumped in, "He's just kidding, Nancy!"
"Yeah, exactly. How could someone frozen like that ever wake up? That's impossible—"
But the next moment, I received an urgent call from the hospital.
At once, Rowan sobered up. He ended the call silently.
"She's awake..."
Inside the cryogenic room, a doctor held a stack of research papers and repeatedly congratulated Rowan.
"This is the first successfully revived cryogenic patient in the world, Mr. Keaton. Congratulations!"
I stood to the side numbly, watching Rowan quickly sign the family consent form from nine years ago. There was a faint excitement in his eyes, barely concealed.
"Where am I, Rowan? Aren't I supposed to be dead..." A clear, female voice came from beside him.
Sandra Pritchard was wrapped in foil, her wide, curious eyes scanning the room like a newborn.
Rowan gasped twice and reached out with trembling hands.
"Sandra, nine years have passed. Welcome to the future."
Sandra stood there in a daze for quite a while. After a moment, her eyes reddened as she opened her arms.
"No wonder you look different—you've gotten so old."
Rowan smiled wistfully and naturally stepped forward to return her hug.
I leaned against the doorway, frowning as I watched the two of them.
Sandra was still the girl who had just graduated from college—her mind and age frozen at twenty-three. And so were her feelings for Rowan.
She pouted slightly and tilted her head to look at me behind him.
"Who's that woman?"
I was just about to speak when Rowan cut me off.
"She's a friend of mine, a Biology major. She's obsessed with cryogenics, so I asked her to swing by and take a look."
I froze in place, staring at him in disbelief.
His gaze flickered, and he quickly pulled me aside, whispering, "Sandra just woke up. Her heart and circulation only recently stabilized, so she can't handle shock. You can't expect her to accept everything that's happened in the past nine years so suddenly!"
As he spoke, he shoved the car keys into my hand. "Sandra can't be exposed to sunlight yet. Bring the car to the entrance."
My eyelid twitched. "What do you take me for?"
Seeing my reluctance, Rowan squeezed my fingertips and coaxed, "Please, she ended up like this to save me. I can't just ignore her.
"Once she adjusts, I'll explain everything to her. Nancy, can you trust me?"
My clenched fists loosened, and in the end, I let my hands fall helplessly to my sides.
After sobering up a few hours earlier, Rowan finally realized what he said. He had specifically asked me to come—partly for my mentor's research, and partly to reassure me.
But now, the joy of reunion seemed to have made him forget all about that.
I pulled my coat tighter, my throat feeling stuck. The cryogenic room was unbearably cold.
As I stepped into the hallway, a few nurses were whispering, "What do you think Mrs. Keaton is going to do about this?"
"Mr. Keaton's real girlfriend is back from the dead—doesn't that make things awkward for her?"
"Who knows? They were each other's first love. If not for that accident, their kid might be grown by now—she wouldn't have even stood a chance!"
I walked faster, a wave of intense irritation rising in my chest.
Somehow, I had become a third wheel.
Outside the hospital, Sandra craned her neck as she climbed into the car.
"Sorry for the trouble, ma'am."
But as soon as she got in, the family photo hanging under the rearview mirror swayed slightly. Three smiling faces pressed together, glaringly bright in the sunlight.
Startled, Rowan quickly reached out and tore it down.
When he turned back, Sandra was clutching her chest, her face deathly pale.
