This was already the twentieth time that month Laverne Dunn had gotten an earful from her neighbor.
"Seriously, Mrs. Platt? In the middle of the day? Have some shame, OK?
"Are you two glued to the bed or what? You're going at it around the clock, and you're so loud that people three blocks away can hear you. My parents are elderly. They're about to have a nervous breakdown because of you. I just gave them their blood pressure meds. If this keeps up, I swear I'm calling the cops!"
The harsh complaints echoed through the conference room, and the employees watched Laverne's expression awkwardly.
She postponed the meeting in a calm tone and drove to the suburban villa.
The moment she walked in, the moans reached her ears, loud and unmistakable. Pushing open the bedroom door, she saw used condoms scattered across the floor.
Her smiling face in the wedding portrait was smeared with a white, sticky liquid.
The two people in bed were still tangled up together, unfazed by her arrival.
"Get out," Ryan Platt said coldly.
Then he lowered his head to kiss Vanessa Dalton's lips.
Laverne thought she didn't feel anything anymore. But the sight still made her clench her fists without meaning to.
"I'm just here to remind you that the neighbor has complained multiple times. Keep it down, or she'll record you and post it online."
She paused, a faint bitterness rising in her throat.
"It's our families' reputation at stake. Maybe try not to—"
A box of condoms flew past her ear, hitting the floor with a gut-wrenching thud.
"Reputation?" Ryan scoffed. "Have you ever thought about my reputation all those years you kept me as your backup?
"Besides, your family is in no position to go up against me now. If you don't want them wiped off the map of D.C., then get lost. Now."
Laverne took a deep breath and turned around.
She was about to close the door when Ryan said, "Wait."
He thrust forward hard, and a gasp escaped Vanessa's lips.
The wedding portrait hanging on the wall came crashing down with a loud bang, the frame shattering instantly.
"It's such an eyesore. Throw it out."
Ryan's tone was light, but his words cut deep.
"Wouldn't want it messing with me getting hard when I'm with Nessa."
Laverne crouched down. The moment her fingers touched the glass shards, she got a cut, tiny beads of blood slowly seeping out.
But she didn't make a sound. She just picked up the portrait and tucked it into her pocket.
A dismissive scoff sounded behind her, followed by the bed creaking violently.
She'd long given up on Ryan, but in that moment, her heart still ached.
Back then, Ryan loved Laverne more than his own life.
On her wedding day seven years ago, her best friend and maid of honor shed a single tear.
Aaron Bowman, Laverne's fiancé, dashed to her side and pulled her away, leaving Laverne humiliated in front of everyone.
But Laverne didn't cry. She stuffed the bouquet into the hands of the best man, Ryan.
"Ryan, you're looking at a bride-to-be. Want to be the groom?"
At that moment, Ryan's eyes lit up like never before.
He pulled her to the top floor, where an even more lavish wedding venue had been set up.
Then, he dropped to one knee and produced a diamond ring.
"I was thinking that after your wedding ended, I'd come up here by myself and pretend to marry you. Now... my dream has come true."
Ryan didn't care that people knew he'd been Laverne's simp for years.
The next day, he had the media expose Aaron's affair and forced Aaron to leave the country.
He proved to be the perfect husband, making Laverne the envy of everyone.
But on their sixth anniversary, she caught him in bed with Vanessa.
Laverne's breath caught for a few seconds. Then she rushed up and slapped him hard.
"Vanessa forced you, didn't she?"
Ryan didn't dodge. The coldness in his eyes made Laverne feel like she didn't even know him anymore.
"No. It was my choice.
"Laverne, Nessa loves me more than anything. Do you?
"No, you don't! I'm just a tool for you to get back at Aaron. After being your simp for seven years, now I just want to know what it feels like to be loved. How's that wrong?"
Laverne's heart shattered. "I want a divorce, Ryan!"
After a moment of silence, Ryan picked up the trembling Vanessa from the bed.
"OK."
Panicked, Laverne chased after him. As she was about to grab his arm, he shot her a disgusted glare.
"You want a divorce, don't you? I've already agreed. What else do you want?"
In the past, whenever Laverne got angry and threatened to split up, Ryan would frantically beg, trying to win her back.
But after that day, he began to push aggressively for a divorce.
She cried, threw tantrums, and had meltdowns more times than she could count.
Yet he refused to budge, growing colder and more distant with each passing moment.
In the end, he wouldn't even go back to their home downtown, spending days and nights with Vanessa in the suburban villa.
Laverne didn't get it. How could Ryan be like a completely different person out of the blue? How could he just stop loving her like that?
When she asked him, he said flatly, "I've lost interest. Is there a problem?"
Last month, Ryan forcibly relocated her mother's grave simply because Vanessa's dog died.
That shattered the last shred of hope she had left. Her heart felt completely hollow now.
Pulling back from the memories, Laverne found herself already at the front door.
Ryan's assistant, Shaun Malone, called.
"Ms. Dunn, Mr. Platt wants the divorce papers signed right away. He's marrying Ms. Dalton in seven days. I suggest you think about what's best for you."
Laverne said softly, "Bring them over. I'll sign."
Then she texted someone back.
"You're right. We can't make it past the seventh year. So I'm going back for the arranged marriage. See you in seven days."
