Diary Told Me About Your Lies Chapter 01
Three years into her marriage to Kamden Alston, Liliana Shepley stumbled upon a diary written ten years in the future.
The entries revealed that Kamden had been cheating on her since their second year of marriage.
At first, Liliana refused to believe it.
She stayed remarkably calm, noting down every act of love and devotion Kamden had shown her.
She wrote about how they'd met at a book club, arguing at length over a controversial topic.
When the meeting wrapped up, Kamden blocked her path at the top of the stairs.
That was when she found out he was Chicago's most prominent entrepreneur and author.
After that encounter, he began to pursue her relentlessly.
She wrote about her master's graduation—how he'd canceled a crucial business meeting and showed up at her graduation party in formal attire.
And then there was the mugging. When things got violent, Kamden shoved her to safety and collapsed on the ground, blood pouring from the stab wound.
In that moment, Liliana knew he was the man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with.
"He risked his life to protect me. He would never cheat. I trust him."
Finishing her entry, Liliana snapped the journal shut and purposefully pushed the whole thing out of her mind.
But after some time, a strange, inexplicable urge pulled her back to it. Acting on impulse, she flipped to the first few pages.
The text had changed.
"If you doubt me, go to the Velour Estate tonight. Kamden will be there closing a deal, with his mistress at his side."
"Please believe me, because I am you from ten years in the future."
Liliana froze.
The handwriting was a perfect match to her own. For the first time, her absolute certainty began to waver.
Just yesterday, Kamden mentioned an important reception he needed to attend at a private winery out in the suburbs.
He even asked her to come along.
But Liliana turned him down. She had always hated gatherings fueled by cold, calculated interests.
Her heart racing, Liliana closed the diary.
She left the house, backed the Maybach out of the garage, and drove straight to the Velour Estate.
"It has to be a lie. It has to be," she kept telling herself on the drive over.
"If Kamden isn't inside, I will treat him even better from now on."
Soon, she pulled up to the entrance of the Velour Estate.
Then she walked inside, giving Kamden's name to the server.
"Oh, Mr. Alston," the server said. "He's in private room 001. I'll show you the way."
Liliana's breath caught in her throat.
She hesitated for a while before waving the guy off.
"I know where it is.
"I'll go by myself."
Room 001 was close by, but the walk felt endless.
Her whole body felt weighed down, her legs like stone, every step an effort.
When she finally reached the entrance, she peered through the narrow gap between the double doors. She instantly recognized the man she'd shared a bed with for the past three years.
Sitting right beside him was another woman!
As they drank and chatted, his hand rested openly on her bare thigh, just beneath the hem of her short skirt.
Liliana's mind went blank, her vision briefly blurring.
She had seen the woman before.
It was Audrey Haywood, an obsessive fan of Kamden's.
Audrey once stood outside Kamden's office building with a banner and flowers, begging for his attention.
Liliana had never considered her a threat.
She'd assumed a vulgar, foolish woman like Audrey could never catch Kamden's eye.
Besides, Kamden had done everything to make Liliana feel secure.
He'd repeatedly ordered security to remove Audrey from the premises.
He'd insulted her in front of the media, openly calling her desperate.
As a punishment, he'd even seen to it that she lost her job.
Refusing to give up, Audrey had rushed up to Kamden and cut her own wrists with a knife.
Kamden completely ignored her, despite the blood pooling on the floor.
He had clearly despised her—so why was he acting so intimate with her now?
Just then, Liliana caught voices drifting from the private room.
"No, Mr. Alston. I have to drink this one with Audrey!"
Before Audrey could even reach for the glass, Kamden snatched it away.
"She's young. Don't pressure her," he said. "I'll take this one for her."
Kamden was mildly allergic to alcohol.
A man in his position rarely drank heavily at social events, usually having someone else step in when he was pressured.
But tonight, he downed glass after glass like a man possessed—all to protect Audrey.
After several rounds, highly intoxicated, Kamden leaned back and held Audrey firmly in his arms.
Reeking of booze, he kissed her hair and forehead without holding back.
They held each other like they were the only two people in the room.
Liliana couldn't watch another second. She bolted to the restroom and threw up violently.
"Kamden, how dare you lie to me!"
