I Died Before You Loved Me Chapter 01

The smell of disinfectant was pungent, like a pair of icy hands tightly strangling my throat.
The doctor was a middle-aged man. He pushed up his glasses and pointed at the grayish-white shadow, his tone as mechanical as if reading a death sentence.
"Glioma. It's located very deep and is compressing the optic nerve. Charlotte, if you don't have surgery, you have about three months left."
"And if I do have the surgery?"
I heard my own voice, so ethereal it seemed to not belong to this world.
"The success rate is less than 20%. Even if you survive, there's a high probability you'll be in a vegetative state."
I nodded, surprisingly calm.
"Then I won't treat it. Just prescribe me some painkillers."
When I walked out of the consultation room, a torrential downpour had started outside.
I stood at the main entrance of the hospital, looking at the gloomy gray sky, and suddenly really wanted a cigarette.
My phone vibrated with the notification sound for a special contact.
I tapped it open; it was a news push notification.
The headline was sensational: “Sterling Corporation's Alexander High-Profile Declaration of Love to Mystery Girlfriend?”
The accompanying picture was a screenshot of the interview from just now.
In the frame, Alexander wore a well-tailored black suit, his features handsome yet exuding a careless, chilling indifference.
He said my flaws were as many as the stars.
I looked at his familiar face on the screen, and my heart felt as if it were fiercely gripped by an invisible hand, aching and swelling.
Seven years.
I had been by his side for seven years.
He was the lofty Alexander, and I was Charlotte, living under another's roof.
Everyone said Charlotte was Alexander's dog, coming when called and leaving when dismissed.
I thought that as long as I was good enough, obedient enough, one day I could warm his heart.
It turned out that in his eyes, I was just a pile of countless "flaws."
"Charlotte?"
A black Bentley stopped in front of me. The window rolled down, revealing the somewhat awkward face of the driver, Robert Miller.
"Alexander asked me to pick you up. Tonight is Ms. Eleanor Sterling's birthday banquet. Please... don't be late."
I put away my phone, stuffed the crumpled diagnosis report into the very bottom of my bag, and forced a standard, impeccable smile.
"Alright, sorry for the trouble, Robert."
The heater in the car was on full blast, but it couldn't warm my freezing hands and feet.
I leaned against the car window, watching the neon lights rapidly retreating outside.
This city was so prosperous it made one dizzy.
Beneath every light was a story, but the story that belonged to me seemed to be coming to an end.
Three months.
Ninety days.
Two thousand, one hundred and sixty hours.
Alexander, this was the absolute limit of how long I could love you.
