He Moved On While I Was Dying Chapter 01

Lucinda's POV
Trapped in a blizzard, I sliced my palm open to feed Logan Stanley my blood just to keep him alive.
Hypothermia wrecked my legs, and I slipped into a five-year coma.
The moment consciousness returned, I overheard him talking to the doctor.
"Mr. Stanley, your wife's condition is stable, and there's a good chance she'll come around. Are you sure you want to proceed with euthanasia?"
Logan's voice was cold and calculated. "It's never about money. I've wasted five years on her. I can't afford to wait any longer.
"Living like this, she's better off dead."
A wave of bitterness crashed over me.
Five years had changed everything.
The man who'd once sobbed and begged me not to die was gone, lost to time.

Footsteps stopped at my bedside.
I looked up, seeing Logan for the first time in five years. He wasn't nearly as worked up as I'd imagined.
His gaze was unreadable as he finally asked, "Anywhere hurting? I'll get the doctor."
My throat was dry. I tried to speak, but nothing came out. I could only shake my head slowly.
An awkward silence filled the room.
Then the door flew open, and a perky voice rang out, "Logie, you said you'd take me to pick out my birthday gift. Remember?"
A young girl walked in, and we locked eyes.
Her smile froze on her face, and she hesitated, darting a glance at Logan.
Flustered, he avoided her eyes and sputtered out an awkward excuse. "This is my secretary, Katrina Burke."
Katrina clearly wasn't happy with that label, but she said nothing, tears welling up in her eyes.
I dropped my gaze, feeling a sharp sting in my chest.
She was the spitting image of my younger self—young, bubbly, her eyeteeth flashing when she smiled. Exactly Logan's type.
As if unable to bear the tension, he grabbed Katrina and hurried out.
Then a few doctors came in and checked me over. They said even though I'd woken up, my legs were too far gone from the frostbite. My chances of ever standing again were next to nothing.
It wasn't exactly shocking news. Honestly, back on that mountain, I never thought I'd make it out alive.
The next few days, Logan came by every single day, right on schedule. He'd massage my legs like he'd done it a million times, peeling apples with effortless ease.
Whenever I tried to talk to him, he'd just listen patiently, never responding, never arguing.
He stuck to a strict routine. As soon as dusk hit, he'd take off.
Every time I tried to get him to stay, he'd say, "Got some work to do. I'll be back tomorrow."
Today, the door clicked shut again.
I stared blankly at the sunset through the window, and the nurses' gossip drifted right over.
"I heard that patient who was comatose for five years finally came around."
"I can't believe she made it. Her husband was about to euthanize her, wasn't he?"
My fingers curled under the blanket.
These past few days, I had barely gotten a chance to catch up on Logan's life. He never answered my questions.
"Did you know her husband's filthy rich?
"He's had her on imported meds this whole time, and the IV drips have been going nonstop. It must've cost a fortune."
The voice was jealous, then took a sharp turn. "But he's got a new girl. That's why he wanted to euthanize her."
When they mentioned the new girl, Katrina's face popped into my head.
I knew already, but after twenty years with Logan, how could I let go so easily?
On the discharge day, Logan came to pick me up.
I stared at his side face and blurted, "Can you fire your secretary?"
His hand froze on my arm, and he didn't say a word—just steered the conversation away, like he always did. "Nice out today. Wanna catch some sun before we head home?"
I grabbed his wrist and locked eyes with him. "Logan, what are you hesitating for? Didn't you say she's just your secretary?"
His smile dropped in an instant. He yanked his wrist free and stepped back to put distance between us.
Taking a deep breath, he said, "Lucinda, I never begged you to save me five years ago.
"I've been more than generous with you these years—sunk my money and my best years into you.
"Had I known it'd end up like this, we should've just died together on that mountain!"
My breath hitched in my throat.
When he saw my stunned stare, he suddenly slumped.
"Yeah, Katrina isn't my secretary. We've been together for three years," his voice tight.
"It's her birthday today. I gotta be with her.
"The driver will take you home."
With that, he bolted.
