I Don't Want You As My Brother Anymore Chapter 01

It had been seven years since the Alvarez family found me.
And for seven years, I still wasn’t allowed inside their house.
Lydia Powell—the adopted girl who had taken my place—never left. She stayed in that house like she belonged there, while I stood outside like a stranger who didn’t quite qualify.
The reason sounded almost ridiculous.
In my family, every time someone came back after being gone for years, they had to do a “reading.” A crystal ball. If the result was good, you could come home. If it wasn’t, you had to wait.
My brother, Nathaniel Alvarez, was the one who did the reading for me.
Ninety-nine times.
Every single time, he told me the same answer—no.
So I waited.
For seven years, I believed him.
Until the hundredth time.
That night, I stood outside the divination room and watched through a small crack in the door. The room was dim, filled with the scent of burning candles. The crystal ball rested quietly on the table, glowing faintly.
The light inside slowly settled.
Clear.
Steady.
A positive result.
A yes.
For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.
After seven years, I finally got the answer I had been waiting for.
Nathaniel had already repeated the reading several times. The result never changed.
It was still yes.
But he didn’t say anything.
He just stared at the crystal ball, silent, like he was thinking about something.
Then, slowly, he spoke.
“It has to be negative.”
My heart dropped.
“Liddy’s been pampered her whole life. She’s never faced any real hardship.”
“If Evie comes home, Liddy will have to move out. She won’t be able to handle it.”
His voice was calm.
Decided.
Like this had already been settled in his mind.
Then he reached out and gently spun the crystal ball.
The light inside shattered.
It swirled, broke apart… and slowly formed again.
From yes—
to no.
Just like that.
He stood up and muttered under his breath, “She won’t find out.”
“It’s been seven years. No one has noticed anything.”
No one.
Except me.
In that moment, everything inside me went cold.
The answer I had waited seven years for… had never been real.
I hadn’t been kept out because of tradition.
I had been kept out because he chose her.
My mind went blank.
All the waiting, all the patience, all the quiet hope I had held onto—it suddenly felt pointless.
Then a voice came from behind me.
Bright. Sweet. Familiar.
“Evie, why are you out here?”
I turned.
Lydia stood at the gate, her voice light, almost surprised, like she was the one who belonged here.
“Nate’s doing the reading,” she said. “You’re not supposed to be here.”
Before I could respond, the door suddenly opened.
Nathaniel stepped out.
The moment he saw me, his expression changed.
Just for a second—panic flashed across his face.
Then it disappeared.
He frowned, like I had done something wrong.
“How long have you been standing there?” he asked.
