His Perfect Girl My Perfect Exit Chapter 01
Everyone kows I live for Giovanni. I can do everything for him.
Until I learned Giovanni had fallen for the girl who took my place—the scholarship student from the exchange program.
An eager reporter shoved a microphone in my face.
"Ms. Greymoor, all of Boston knows you were devoted to Mr. Miller. Now that his affections have shifted, are you, as the rumors say, heartbroken?"
The whole world seemed to be watching, waiting for my signature meltdown.
Instead, I couldn't hold back a soft laugh.
"I was devoted to him? Since when?"
***
A stunned silence fell over the room.
The reporter pressed, "Ms. Greymoor, was that statement made in anger?"
"Just the truth," I replied with a smile.
"And your thoughts on Mr. Miller and Ms. Stafford's relationship..."
"I'll give them my blessings," I said, picking up a champagne flute and raising it in their direction. "A perfect match. Well-suited."
Giovanni's expression darkened.
This wasn't the reaction he expected. The old me would have thrown the glass, made a scene, demanded to know why he changed his mind.
Antonia Stafford spoke up in a gentle voice. "Thal, please don't be upset. It's my fault..."
"It's not your fault!" I cut her off, turning to the buffet table to serve myself a slice of cake.
My phone buzzed.
It was a text from an unknown number, "Enjoying the show?"
I deleted it.
I knew it was Jeromy Krause, the man I'd really been with for three years, hidden from them all.
He knew about the party tonight. He knew the role I was expected to play.
Across the room, my parents saw Antonia's eyes welling up and immediately drew her into a comforting hug. "You've been through so much, dear."
Dad gave Giovanni an approving pat on the back. "Your parents filled me in. Treat Tonia right."
Then, they finally looked at me.
"Thal," Mom began, her tone strained, "please be kind. Tonia's had a difficult life. You know about her family."
Dad sighed. "Just come home. No more of this."
Antonia reached out timidly to touch my sleeve. "Thal, let's go back together..."
I withdrew my arm. "I'll catch up later. I'm not done here."
Giovanni instantly moved to block my path. "Where are you going now? Back to the racetrack? To some bar? Thalassa, behave."
"I have a meeting," I said, showing him my phone's calendar. "An investment pitch."
He looked at me as if I'd told a joke. "What investment? Weren't you stuck on some farm for half a year..."
"Feeding cows?" I interrupted him, holding his gaze. "I did more than just that."
Later, in the underground parking garage, he caught up with me.
"What's this really about, Thalassa?"
I unlocked the door with my key. "Nothing."
"Stop pretending," he said, holding the door open. "You'll just show up tomorrow in tears, asking me why..."
"Tears?" I laughed. "Giovanni, people change."
He paused, looking at my face as if for the very first time.
The irony was, he'd seen it for ten years.
I'd kept my hair long because he once said he preferred it that way. I'd bottled up my temper because he found my anger embarrassing.
Even when he'd held his new girlfriend and told me, "Thalassa, don't be difficult," I had only ever asked, with tears in my eyes, "Why?"
What had he said then?
"You never grow up."
"Antonia is lovely," I said, sliding into the driver's seat and buckling up. "Docile, devoted, and you're her entire world. A great match."
His face tightened. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means," I said, starting the engine, "I'm tired.
"Chasing you for a decade really lost its charm."
I drove away. In the rearview mirror, his figure grew smaller.
I dialed a number I knew by heart.
"Had your fill of the drama?" I asked.
A low laugh came through the speaker. "It's only the opening scene, Thal.
"Stick to the plan?"
"Yes.
"Let them enjoy their victory a little longer."
I ended the call. That night, when I returned to the Greymoor's villa, I found my old bedroom had been turned into a music room for Antonia.
Mom took my hand, explaining, "Thal, you're hardly ever home. Tonia practices piano every day. This room gets the most sun."
