When I Loved You No More Chapter 01
Avery's POV
“Number 3028, you may come out.”
The metal door screeched open, the harsh sound echoing off the concrete walls.
Seven days, but it felt longer than the seven years before.
I stood up, limped following the warden towards the exit. Behind me, someone muttered a curse. Another spat on the ground.
I ignored it. My palm instinctively settled on my stomach, and all I felt was emptiness.
It had once held a life—a life I had hoped for five long years, enduring countless medications and injections to make it happen. Yet before I could even share the good news, it was gone. I had cried for three days and nights over it, but now, it was just like my heart—empty, with nothing left.
I let out a bitter laugh.
When I walked out of prison, my husband Aiden was already waiting at the door.
He stood a few steps away, dressed in a bespoke suit that accentuated his broad shoulders and lean waist. He looked as he always did—aloof, noble, and breathtakingly handsome.
When he saw me, he strode forward, taking my hands gently, frowned. "Avery, why didn’t you call me when something like this happened? "
I looked at him and gave a faint smile. “Call you? Was your phone even on?”
When Vivienne publicly accused me of being a homewrecker and of trying to attack her, I called Aiden almost immediately. But no matter how many times I tried, the call was cut off every time. Even when the police took me away, I still couldn’t reach him.
Aiden froze. A flicker of guilt crossed his face. “I didn’t expect things to turn out like this. I was in a meeting. I couldn’t afford any distractions.” He paused, his voice dropping. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay,” I replied softly. “You have your own responsibilities. I shouldn’t have disturbed you.”
“No, don’t say that.” Aiden stepped closer. “I’ve already looked into it. That day, Vivienne saw you getting too emotional, so she said some things she shouldn’t have and made that mistake. I apologize on her behalf.”
I glanced up at him. “Okay.” There was nothing else I could think to say.
In truth, this wasn’t the first time. He had done this for her ninety-nine times already.
The first time, Vivienne accused me of cheating in front of Aiden’s parents and even produced photos. Aiden glared at me in anger, calling me shameless. If I hadn’t proven the photos were doctored, I would have been branded a slut in their eyes. Yet when I turned the accusation back on Vivienne, Aiden simply said she had been deceived as well, apologized for her, and let the matter drop.
The second time, Vivienne “accidentally” stepped on my dress at a business event, nearly leaving me exposed. It humiliated Aiden’s family and almost cost them an important partnership. But Aiden only smiled and said it was an accident, telling me not to be so petty.
The third time, Vivienne deliberately broke my bracelet, the only thing my grandmother had left me. I confronted her angrily, eyes red, asking why she would do such a thing. But Aiden immediately stepped in front of her, telling me not to make a fuss. If I wanted, he could buy me ten similar bracelets. And Vivienne? She hid behind him, making faces at me.
…
It was the 100th time. During my days in prison, I kept wondering—if only he had answered my call that one time, could my child have avoided this fate? But in the end, I decided to let go of all hope.
And now, my heart was completely still. Whether he apologized or not—what did it matter anymore?
Aiden studied me, his brows furrowing, unease crawling into his expression.
He suddenly grasped my arm, his palm hot, his grip tight. “You’re not angry?”
A soft laughter escaped my lips, tinged with irony. “You’ve already explained everything. I understand,” I murmured, “I’m tired. Let’s go home.”
Gently pulling my wrist free, I walked toward the car.
Inside, the silence was suffocating, thick enough to taste.
Aiden’s fingers drummed nervously against the steering wheel. Meanwhile, he kept sneaking glances at me. I caught a flicker of conflict in his eyes.
"Come on, if you’re upset, just say it. I’ll make it up to you," he said, unable to hold back.
"No, it’s already in the past," I replied calmly.
"Then why—"
"Aiden," I interrupted, "what exactly do you want me to do? Cling to you like before, asking every day whether you love me or her? Or stay like this, giving you all the freedom you want?"
He froze, his expression complicated. But in the end, he just sighed, instead saying, “You’ve changed.”
“Maybe.” When you love someone, or when you stop loving someone, you’re never the same person.
My gaze turned towards the car’s window, fighting down the sudden surge of emotions inside my heart.
Throughout the rest of the ride, none of us spoke.
Half an hour later, the car pulled into the villa's driveway.
When I stepped out, my eyes strayed to the entrance of the building.
Vivienne.
