I'm Tired So I Don't Love You Chapter 01
Noelle Briggins never expected her long-distance relationship, already nearing its end, would come to such a wretched conclusion.
For in all the world, no one loved her quite like Cedric Fulmer did.
As a busy hospital director, his time was precious; yet he made nine hundred trips overseas, dedicated to a commute that consumed nearly ten thousand hours of his life.
They only ever had a few hurried moments together each time, yet he always said, in a deep, steady voice, that he would gladly do it all over again. Once, he went all the way just to hold her as the first snow fell.
He'd sent her countless gifts—from long, handwritten love letters to a necklace worth millions, which he won at an auction after outbidding everyone.
Anything he believed might make her smile, he would risk everything to get for her.
That deep, unwavering love had lasted for a full ten years.
That day, Noelle took a red-eye flight home just to see him. Standing outside the private room where he and his childhood friends were hanging out, she overheard them praising how steadfast Cedric's love for her was—only for him to deny it in a low, hoarse voice.
His words struck her to the core, and her heart throbbed with unbearable pain.
The room went dead silent in an instant.
After a long while, Isaac Mitchell finally broke the tension. "Ceddy, you're joking, right?
"You and Elle were the most well-known couple in school. When you sent her off, you cried your heart out behind her back. And for the past few years, you've been flying abroad nonstop just to be with her..."
He let out a couple of awkward laughs, continuing with forced dramatic flair, "How is it possible for the love to just be gone?"
"I don't know," Cedric replied flatly.
Confident as he always was, he now looked a little lost. "The past few years have been exhausting.
"Taking the time to see her made me happy, but I mostly just felt lonely and tired during those dozen or so hours on the road.
"I had to keep changing the types of gifts I gave her. I was constantly thinking about whether she would like it or if it would make her happy when she received it."
With the well-defined hands of a surgeon, he held his glass and looked at the reflections of light within it. "I still love her," he murmured, "but this love feels like it's slowly draining away."
His friends exchanged looks, then awkwardly changed the subject.
Outside the door, Noelle's mind went completely blank, a loud ringing filling her ears.
Her plan to surprise him was now ruined. She quietly slipped away, her mind reeling.
She even found herself thinking how much better it would have been if she hadn't come back early.
She could have stayed wrapped in the illusion of his devotion, pretending nothing had changed.
Unfortunately, life didn't come with second chances or "what-ifs."
While she was in a daze, her phone suddenly vibrated.
Noelle looked up and saw Cedric standing in an open area, frowning as he scanned the surroundings anxiously.
She felt a pang of anxiety and quickly moved into the dark shadows of the trees. She stared at the screen for a long time before finally answering, her throat feeling tight.
Cedric sounded a bit out of breath. "Honey, I just saw your message. You're back already? Where are you now? Are you at the Velvet Club?"
As that familiar voice crackled through the line, Noelle felt a sharp prick of tears she couldn't hold back.
A million questions burned in her throat, but as she fought back the urge to cry, she lied. "I changed my mind and went home instead. When will you be back?"
At her words, the worry in Cedric's eyes cleared, and he said quietly, "I'll be right back—"
Before he could finish speaking, a girl wearing a red scarf came running and crashed into his arms.
Noelle saw with her own eyes how Cedric immediately covered the phone's mouthpiece and ruffled the girl's hair affectionately with a smile.
Then, he abruptly changed his answer. "Sorry, something's come up at work. Wait for me, alright?"
Noelle's eyes locked onto the girl's blushing face.
In an instant, the world tilted, and a numbing chill took hold of her entire body.
