He Risked My Life 100 Times Chapter 01
Everyone knew my fiancé Merritt Webster was the youngest commander in Seattle -cold, stoic, and utterly dedicated.
To be closer to him, I requested an assignment to Seattle, becoming a sniper under his command.
After I joined the unit, he started using a lottery system to assign high-risk missions, featuring two shell casings in a hat: one copper, one steel. Steel meant death.
I drew a death lot every time.
The first time, I went undercover alone in the snow mountains for seven days straight. I almost lost a limb.
The second time, my sniper position was found. The entire rooftop was leveled by artillery. The doctors gave me three death notices.
And the ninety-ninth time, my family's information was leaked. They were blown to pieces right in front of me.
The only thing that kept me going was Merritt's promise that after we got married, he would be my family for the rest of my life.
The night before we were set to get our marriage license, the unit got another emergency mission.
For the first time, I drew the safe lot.
Before I could even process it, he snatched it out of my hand and pressed it into his sister-in-law Daniella Mosley's palm.
"Lynn, Ella was my late brother's wife. He left her in my care. I have to look out for her.
"Sure, this mission is dangerous. But you made it through the other ninety-nine, right? Finish this one, and we'll get married when you're back."
His voice was calm, matter-of-fact. I smiled and tore up the marriage license application I'd been holding onto for ten years.
I didn't want to get married anymore.

"Ashlyn, we have a mission. Stop being dramatic."
Merritt thought I was just throwing a tantrum.
This man, the one I'd loved for ten years, now felt so foreign that it made me shiver with cold.
"Why? Because I was lucky enough to survive when my entire family was wiped out, I deserve to die? They all deserved to die?"
His throat moved. My words hit home.
He looked down and kicked away the torn pieces on the ground. To him, it wasn't a decade of waiting. It was just trash.
"The draw's fair. It's just luck. Nobody feels worse about it than I do.
"But Ella's got no field experience. She's fragile. I can't send her out there to die. You're capable, Lynn. I know you'll make it back."
I barely heard the sneer that crawled out of my throat.
"You feel worse?"
My hand was shaking as I pulled out the death notice from my pocket. I was about to throw it at his face when Daniella came running over.
Her fair hands grabbed my scarred ones apologetically. "God, Lynn, I'm so sorry. Seven years in this unit and I still can't do anything right. I'm just dead weight."
She looked up at Merritt pitifully. "Let me take this one. Really. Lynn probably hasn't fully recovered anyway. I mean, when she was in the ICU last time, you were helping me make dinner and missed the consent forms deadline, so..."
My whole body went cold. I couldn't move or breathe.
While my parents were being blown to pieces, while I was fighting for my life on a hospital bed, he was making dinner with Daniella.
And seven years ago, the day they introduced the lottery system was the day Daniella joined the unit.
I'd drawn the death lot every single time since.
A wave of cold washed over me, starting at my scalp and sinking all the way to my feet.
Luck had nothing to do with it.
He just wanted Daniella to be one hundred percent safe. And he was willing to throw me to the wolves ninety-nine times to make that happen.
I crumpled the death notice in my fist.
Then I pulled off the engagement ring- the one that had already started to rust- and threw it all into the sewer.
I left and went straight to the office, the one with the only phone in the whole unit, and made a call.
"Remember that undercover operation you offered me? The one with the trafficking ring across the border? I'll take it."
The voice on the other end could barely hide his excitement. "Excellent. You're the best sniper we've got in Seattle. With you on this, we might actually stand a chance.
"But, this mission is extremely high-risk. There's a real chance you won't come back. You're about to marry Commander Webster. Have you thought this through?"
My voice was so hoarse I barely recognized it.
"I'm sure. I don't want Merritt anymore."
"Three days from now, Ashlyn Langston disappears from Seattle for good."
The call ended.
A second later, an explosion ripped through the air behind me.
