Buried In His Vows Chapter 01

Ten years after my death, the criminal responsible for thirteen murder cases was finally arrested.
The trial was broadcast live.
Ezra Whitner faced the camera and confessed to his crimes, listing the locations where he had hidden the bodies.
When he reached the ninth victim, he suddenly gave a strange smile at the camera. "She was the most pitiful, and the one who deserved it most! Within 30 minutes, I want to see all her family members here. Otherwise, I'll take back every word I said and deny everything!
"Don't even think about finding the remaining bodies. You'll never solve this case!"
The public exploded. My name appeared across the live comments feed, and the entire internet started searching for my family.
Bryan Adham angrily threw down his police cap, grabbed his phone, and said coldly, "Nerissa, you've been living it up overseas for ten years. Why do you still resent your family for exposing your real identity?
"You even bribed a murderer to put on this act with you, just so we'd take you back!"
***
Ten years had passed. Now the captain of the criminal investigation unit, Bryan, had lost the youthful innocence he once had.
Even when he was angry, he kept his voice low and steady. "Tomorrow is my wedding with Nic. I've tolerated you for ten years. Do you really have to stir up trouble now?
"Nerissa, no one is going along with your drama this time!"
In the past, I would have apologized right away in a small, nervous voice.
Unfortunately, I had been dead for ten years. I had no way of answering him.
"Sorry, the number..." When he heard the automated voice on the other end of the line, he finally remembered that I had been abroad for ten years.
My old domestic number had long been disconnected.
It felt like he'd directed his anger at nothing.
Bryan picked up his cap in frustration, put it back on, sat down properly, and returned to his usual cold expression.
Someone in the live comments suddenly remembered who I was.
"Nerissa Staffern? The talented designer from back then? What a shame. She disappeared right after the groundbreaking ceremony for the Interstate Bridge."
"So she didn't disappear—she was killed by a murderer!"
"She wasn't even twenty-five when she died. What a waste of talent."
The comments feed was filled with words of regret for me.
Bryan, who was usually level-headed, suddenly couldn't sit still.
He hurried to stand up and clarify the so-called rumors. "Nerissa didn't disappear. Her identity as a fake heiress was exposed, so she abandoned everything here and flew overseas to enjoy a new life!
"The Interstate Bridge project was nearly abandoned when she walked away without notice.
"Thankfully, the real heiress, Nicola Staffern, stepped in during the crisis and spent ten years of hard work to make sure the bridge would be open to the public tomorrow."
When he mentioned Nicola Staffern, it was as if he'd forgotten about his own identity.
Like an overeager young man, he passionately explained Nicola's achievements to everyone.
Just like the first time he received a commendation, he suddenly took my hand and loudly announced to everyone at the venue that I was a talented designer from Portland, and also his fiancée.
"Half of this commendation medal rightfully belongs to Nerissa!"
He removed the brass medal he had just put on and solemnly pinned it to my chest.
Amid his colleagues' teasing cheers, Bryan blushed and kissed me on the lips.
As time passed, everything was different.
Bryan hadn't changed, but the person he cherished had become someone else, and medal after medal had changed owners.
The sincere heart that once moved me to tears had been given entirely to Nicola.
When he spoke of me again, his face was full of barely hidden disgust. "Nerissa, even if you bribed the killer to claim you were murdered, I still wouldn't believe you!
"You'd better show yourself and end this farce, or you'll be breaking the law!"
He glanced sideways at Ezra, his gaze icy.
He then demanded, "Where exactly is Nerissa?!"
The colleagues around him all avoided his sharp gaze, not daring to meet his eyes.
Only Ezra gave a scornful smile. "Officer, I already said it. If you want to know where her body is, I want to see all her family members within thirty minutes."
He pointed at the clock on the wall, a cold glint in his eyes. "Ten minutes have already passed. I suggest you make good use of the time you have left!"
