The Birthday He Betrayed Me Chapter 01

Covering a night shift for a colleague on her birthday, Katharine Wright took in a young woman suffering from a ruptured corpus luteum.
"It was caused by rough sex. Where is your partner?"
Katharine looked up, her gaze colliding straight with her husband's—Dominic Sterling, one of the heirs of the upper class—whose eyes flashed with panic.
Just minutes ago, he was on the phone regretting that he couldn't celebrate her birthday with her; now, here he was, having ruptured another woman's corpus luteum.
What an ironic birthday gift.
Out in the hallway, Dominic's buddies looked at each other in dismay, whispering among themselves:
"Holy crap, Katharine is the one on the night shift?"
"We're screwed. Dominic really messed up this time!"
"Ms. Wright."
Nurse Emily fumed with indignation: "Should I call the director? You have other rounds. Let another doctor handle this patient."
Katharine peeled off her gloves, her movements steady as ever: "No need. Prep the OR. I'll do it myself."
The hallway fell silent for a split second before erupting into even louder chatter.
"For real?
Doesn't Katharine hate that 'female bro' of Dominic's more than anything?
She caught them red-handed and didn't even throw a punch?"
"Remember last time when Tiffany Rivers insisted on swimming with Mr. Sterling in a bikini? Katharine ripped her bottoms off right there, took a picture, and posted it online!"
"That's not all!
Last month they were playing Spin the Bottle on the private jet. A jet worth hundreds of millions, and Katharine smashed it to pieces without blinking."
"Something's off. You don't think she's planning to kill Tiffany on the operating table so no one can steal Dominic from her?"
Amidst the gasps, Dominic irritably loosened his tie, his gaze locked tight on Katharine's lowered eyes.
There wasn't a single ripple of emotion in them.
She even gave him a calm instruction: "Family members wait outside the operating room."
Everyone looked at her with utter disbelief.
After all, in their eyes, Katharine had always been a woman mad with love, willing to do anything.
For the past twenty-eight years, the Sterling family had been her only rock.
But now, she didn't need it anymore.
The surgery went smoothly.
At 3:40 AM, Katharine walked out of the operating room and removed her mask, her face as calm as still water.
Dominic stood at the end of the hallway, his expression taut, as if bracing for a storm he knew was coming.
But Katharine simply walked straight up to him, her voice devoid of any fluctuation: "The surgery was a success. No intercourse for a month, and watch your intensity next time."
With that, she turned to leave.
Her wrist was suddenly seized.
Dominic's grip was crushing, hurting her bones, while an emotion she couldn't decipher churned in his eyes.
"Katharine."
His voice was dangerously low, squeezed out through gritted teeth: "That's your reaction?
You're not angry at all?"
He thought she would cry, scream, and demand answers with red-rimmed eyes, just like she had done countless times before.
Begging him to settle down, begging him to stop tangling with that so-called 'female bro'.
That was the Katharine he knew.
Katharine looked up at him and gently pulled her hand back: "Isn't this exactly what you've always wanted?
A quiet, obedient, and sensible wife who doesn't make a scene. I've become that. Aren't you satisfied?"
Dominic's Adam's apple bobbed, rendered speechless.
He stared into those eyes that were as calm as water and suddenly sneered: "Good. Very good!
Let's see how long you can keep up this act!"
"But then again."
He deliberately leaned in close, his taunting breath hot against her ear: "Your medical skills are a thousand times better than your performance in bed. Next time she's unwell, I'm calling you again."
Just then, Tiffany was wheeled out. The anesthesia hadn't fully worn off, and she called out weakly: "Dominic..."
Dominic turned immediately, striding toward the gurney to clasp her hand, his voice so gentle it stung: "Does it hurt?
I'm right here."
Katharine took one quiet look, then turned and walked toward the on-call room.
Closing the door, she pulled her phone from her pocket and dialed a number she had saved long ago but never called.
"Hello, it's Katharine."
She heard her own voice, unnervingly calm: "Get my divorce from Dominic finalized within a month. If you do, I'll agree to being officially recognized by the family and return to the Whites."
A month ago, this man claiming to be her biological father had found her, bringing a DNA report.
She was the long-lost heiress of the White family, the top dynasty in Kingston, abducted by enemies when she was two.
It wasn't until recently that the Whites finally found her and begged her to come back.
At the time, Katharine refused.
Partly out of resentment for a family that was twenty-eight years late, but mostly because—she still held out hope for Dominic.
On the other end of the line, Rhea White was stunned into silence for a long moment before asking cautiously: "Katharine, you... don't you love that boy Dominic more than life itself?
Why the sudden divorce?"
Katharine gazed out the window at the intensifying snow and spoke slowly: "Back when I was in the orphanage, the Sterling family sponsored my education. Later, when Dominic crashed his car racing for Tiffany and was paralyzed, the doctors said he might never walk again. To repay the Sterlings' kindness, I agreed to his father Edward Sterling's request. I married him and cared for him for two whole years before he could stand again."
Katharine closed her eyes, remembering the day Dominic recovered. The sunlight had been beautiful.
He had held her, weeping like a child, and whispered in her ear: "Katharine, in this life, you are the only one I want."
After that, he really did rein in his wild, rich heir ways for her.
He waited for her to get off work every day, clumsily learned to cook, and held her at night while they watched boring soap operas.
His love was gentle and steady, making her believe for a time that she had finally found her light.
But less than six months later, a single phone call from Tiffany sent him right back to his old crowd.
And Tiffany, emboldened by his affection, trampled on her boundaries time and time again.
She would appear in their living room late at night in pajamas, use his toothbrush, and leave lipstick stains on his shirt collar.
He had never truly changed for her.
Not even once.
Katharine opened her eyes, the last trace of warmth fading from her gaze: "Now the debt of gratitude is paid. I don't owe anyone anything."
On the other end, Rhea almost wept with joy: "Good, my darling daughter, don't you worry!
Within a month, Dad will make sure you are free!"
She hung up, and her phone vibrated again. Dominic had sent a message:
"Just got off the phone with your hospital director. I've resigned on your behalf."
"Since you're being so sensible, we'll bring Tiffany home for you to take care of. It's settled."
Katharine stared at those words for a long time, then slowly typed a reply:
"Okay."
