Love Died After A Hundred Forsakings Chapter 01

Beatrice's POV
When the ship started to go down, my husband, Cassian Everhart, decided to give the only remaining spot on the lifeboat to his childhood sweetheart, Seraphina Bayley.
"You know how to swim," he said. "I'm taking Sera first."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. My whole body trembled.
"You're seriously leaving me and our unborn baby behind?"
He stroked my cheek with that familiar, practiced gentleness.
"Be good. Just hold on. I'll come back for you and our baby in ten minutes. Sera has depression; she can't handle this kind of stress. Please don't make this harder for me."
In fact, this was already the 99th time he'd left me for her.
The first time, he abandoned me halfway through our wedding ceremony just to coax Seraphina—who was on a hunger strike—into eating.
The second time, on the way to my prenatal checkup, he saw her run a red light and insisted on escorting her home himself.
Every single time, I waited exactly where he left me, fully believing he'd come back.
But this time, I was done waiting.
***
For my birthday, Cassian had booked us a seven-day luxury cruise.
But when I entered the banquet hall in my evening gown, I found him holding Seraphina's hand as they cut my birthday cake together.
Beneath the romantic glow of the crystal chandelier, he looked at her with unmistakable tenderness.
Noticing me, Seraphina just gave a playful smile.
"Beatrice, sorry—I suddenly felt like cutting a cake. You aren't mad at me, are you?"
"Bea won't make a fuss over something like that," Cassian said.
He walked over, wrapped an arm around my waist, and affectionately rubbed his nose against mine.
A heavy knot formed in my chest, followed by a deep wave of disgust.
We'd dated for five years and been married for three.
In those eight years, Seraphina had crossed my boundaries more times than I could count.
She'd used a scarf I gave him to wipe down a table, washed her paintbrushes in my drinking glass...
Every time, before I could even voice my displeasure, Cassian would praise me for being so understanding, then try to make up for it later with expensive gifts.
Even though it upset me, I couldn't bring myself to fight with a younger girl like her.
But when I saw the matching necklace around her neck, it still cut deep. My eyes burned as tears threatened to fall.
The surprise and joy I'd felt just ten minutes earlier over my birthday present instantly curdled into resentment and anger.
All of it suddenly felt meaningless.
Dodging Cassian's kiss, I gently pushed him away. "I'm tired. I'm going back to my room."
Caught off guard, he instinctively glanced down at my pregnant belly, worry flashing in his eyes.
"Are you okay? Do you want me to call a doctor?"
I shook my head.
"Then I'll walk you back so you can get some rest."
Just as he reached out to steady me, Seraphina looped her arm through his.
"Cassie, I want to go watch the fireworks show."
I ended up walking all the way back to my room alone. Cassian never followed.
The disappointment piled up until something inside me finally broke.
He hadn't always been like this.
When I was in 11th grade, my parents divorced, and I was forced to transfer to a school in Houston.
On my first day, the whole class mocked the heavy accent I had during my introduction.
It was Cassian who pulled his desk over next to mine, smiling as he asked, "Beatrice, can I sit by you?"
When some classmates locked me in an abandoned bathroom during evening study hall, he broke the door down and draped his uniform jacket over my soaked clothes.
During the coldest winter, a gas pipe exploded in my house.
My dad grabbed my brother, my stepmom grabbed my sister, and they all bolted outside.
Nobody remembered that I was still inside with a broken bone.
It was Cassian who ran into the burning house without hesitation and carried me out on his back.
I made it out without a scratch, but he was left with a severe, permanent scar on his arm.
"The ship hit a reef!"
"We're sinking—run!"
The floor lurched violently as screams and pounding footsteps filled the hallway.
Terrified, I pushed my door open, only to nearly be knocked over by someone rushing past.
The corridor was a mob of people frantically making a break for the stairwell.
Shielding my belly, I hesitated, too afraid to force my way into the crowd.
"Honey!"
Cassian's familiar voice cut through the chaos. I saw him pushing against the current of bodies, fighting his way toward me.
I threw myself into his arms, and he carefully shielded me as we scrambled up to the deck.
But by the time we arrived, the lifeboats were already full. Only one remained—a small boat that could carry just two people.
Just as I was about to step in, Cassian gripped my hand tightly, his voice strained.
"Honey, you know how to swim.
"I'm taking Sera first."
