Trading My Fiance For His Best Friend Chapter 01
Many people were sitting in the private dining room, including his closest friends and my bridesmaids.
After a few rounds of drinks, everyone was a little tipsy.
Lucas Hayes suddenly pulled Chloe Bennett, his lifelong childhood sweetheart, into his side.
"Look, Coco," he chuckled. "I guess a lifetime of memories really can’t compete with a shiny new arrival."
"After all, I’ve been snatched away by Charlotte Davis, the outsider, haven't I?"
"I’m marrying someone else tomorrow. Do you feel the regret, too?"
Chloe’s expression crumbled into bitterness, looking like she was one second away from a breakdown.
"What does regret matter?"
"It’s your own fault for falling for her so late in the game."
Lucas just looked at the tear-filled eyes of Chloe in his arms, his expression full of tender affection.
"How about we settle that regret tonight?"
Chloe looked up: "Make up for it how?"
Then I saw Lucas slowly look over at me.
"Darling!"
He called out loudly.
"Tomorrow we will be husband and wife. I promise, I will be loyal to our marriage until death and will never betray you."
"But tonight, the last night before our wedding, why don't we play something exciting and give each other one night of freedom?"
A burst of jeering and screaming erupted in the private dining room.
Then, because of my icy pale face, it fell into dead silence again.
Lucas wasn’t even trying to hide his betrayal; it was written all over his face.
He wanted to spend a night of reckless pleasure with the childhood sweetheart girl he had been flirting with throughout his youth.
He wanted to settle the score for a lifetime of tension that never made it to the bedroom.
He was certain I wouldn't flatly refuse him, and that as long as he coaxed me properly afterward, I wouldn't hold this against him.
The reason for his confidence was simple.
He was the one who chased me, but on paper, I was marrying way up. To his circle, I was just a girl who got lucky.
He thought I was not only captivated by him, but also absolutely reluctant to let go of his wealthy family.
For a girl from a humble background with working-class parents, breaking into the elite world was supposed to be impossible.
To have met him was incredibly lucky.
He was right.
A common girl catching the eye of a wealthy young master, only to be made things difficult by his wealthy family—I had experienced that profoundly.
But not with him.
The girls beside me tugged at my sleeves:
"Charlotte, don't be stupid, you can't agree."
I looked at Lucas for a long time, seeing clearly the stubbornness and certainty of winning in his eyes.
Finally, I nodded, my tone calm:
"Alright, I agree."
"Oh oh oh!"
A burst of laughter and applause arose.
The silent atmosphere in the private dining room dissipated in an instant.
"Charlotte is so generous!
"Now we see why she’s the one worthy of the Hayes name!"
"No wonder my brother Lucas knelt in his old man's study for three days and three nights just to marry you!"
"A woman entering our circle needs that kind of class!"
The slightly tense corners of Lucas's lips curled into a relaxed smile, and he held the obedient childhood sweetheart in his arms even tighter.
He put his arm around her and stood up:
"Alright, it's getting late tonight, and I have a wedding to hold tomorrow. I can't stay up all night partying with you guys, so Coco and I are going to head out first."
"Order whatever drinks you want and have fun. Everything is on my tab tonight!!"
"Whoa!~"
"Poor Coco is going to have a very long night~"
Another wave of teasing and cheering erupted in the private dining room.
Walking past me, to appear fair, he looked down and said to me generously:
"Honey, if you’re feeling adventurous, feel free to find a man of your own tonight. I promise I won't mind."
He must have figured out my proud and conservative nature, knowing I couldn't possibly play around like that, which was why he said such things to me.
I looked back at him: "Really?"
He raised an eyebrow: "Of course. I’m a man of my word. You know I always deliver."
"Just like I said I would marry you, and I did."
His tone was proud, as if marrying me into his family was some tremendous favor he had bestowed upon me.
So I should also be sensible and be magnanimous about him and Chloe tonight.
I withdrew my gaze and looked toward the deep corner of the private dining room, at the man who had been icy-faced and silent all night:
"I don't need to go outside to find a man."
"What?"
Ignoring Lucas's expression, I stood up and walked straight to the man sitting in the shadows.
I crouched down, lowering my posture, emotions pouring from my eyes as I looked up to meet his gaze.
I was carefully invited.
"Spend the night with me?"
