He Only Regretted Losing Me Chapter 01

After I lost the baby, I started keeping my distance from my husband, Adrian Lockwood—a Major General.
His field training ended on the 7th, and I scheduled my clinical shifts to start the next day.
When he had to go to a military banquet, I turned down going with him, saying I had a packed surgery schedule.
Whenever he actually got leave and came home, I'd book a work trip right away, away for a week each time.
Even when I was falsely accused and locked up—they needed a family member to bail me out—I just said I had no family and did my three days in detention calm and steady.
Eventually, my cold shoulder pushed him over the edge.
He grabbed my wrist, his eyes bloodshot, his voice tight with anger. "Serena, why didn't you tell me when you were in trouble?
"Do you even see me as your husband?"
I looked at him and simply smiled.
"But Adrian, you're the one who never really treated me like your wife." I thought.

The day I got out, the first snow hit Boston.
I'd just stepped down the stairs when a military SUV screeched to a stop right in front of me.
The door flew open, and Adrian strode over, with his brow furrowed tight. "Serena, why didn't you contact me when you were confined?"
I offered a faint smile. "Contact you? You never answer my calls anyway."
The day they hauled me to the disciplinary office, I called him twenty-seven times. Every single one went to voicemail.
Adrian's expression stiffened. "Arabella had acute gastritis that night, so I took her to the base hospital. She needed quiet, so I turned off my comms."
"It's fine. I never wanted to bother you—you're busy, I get it."
Adrian suddenly seized my wrist. He stared at me, a weird, pent-up restlessness in his eyes. "Why aren't you even mad?"
"Why bother being mad? I'm tired. I just want to go home."
I pulled my hand away and turned for the back seat of the Jeep.
The drive was silent.
Adrian finally spoke. "Are you still harping on about what happened before?"
"Major General Lockwood!" I cut him off. "What do you want from me? To cling to you every single day like I used to? Or to be how I am now—no drama, giving you all the freedom you want?"
Adrian hesitated, couldn't say a word.
"I just think you've changed," he spoke softly.
Silence filled the vehicle again. Adrian was about to say something else when his phone rang.
Arabella Winslow's sweet, syrupy voice came through the line.
"Adri, I'm running errands in the city. I've got way too much stuff to carry back alone. Come get me, please!"
Adrian shot me a quick glance.
I stared out at the passing scenery, like I hadn't even heard a word.
His voice suddenly turned sharp with irritation. "Arabella, aren't the guards assigned to you just for show?"
"But you always came for me before." Her voice was all sweet and innocent. "If you won't, I'll just ask that deputy company commander from the 3rd Battalion. He said yesterday he wanted to take me out for dinner."
Adrian's knuckles whitened. "Stay right there."
The call ended.
He turned to me, his voice tight. "Serena, I..."
"I'll take a supply truck." I stepped out of the car. "Go get her. She shouldn't be kept waiting."
"Serena!"
He got out and grabbed my arm. "We're just old friends anymore, but our families still have ties. I can't just leave her hanging..."
"Got it. Whatever."
I hailed a passing transport truck and hopped into the passenger seat.
In the rearview mirror, he was standing in the cloud of dust, fading into a tiny spot in the distance.
My phone vibrated.
It was a message from the military liaison team.
"Dr. Ashcroft, your request for the border medical team's been approved. Do you want us to get in touch with Major General Lockwood's staff? It's an open-ended assignment."
I stared out the window as the scenery passed by, my voice soft. "No need. I filed the divorce papers and the transfer request at the same time. I'll leave once the paperwork's done."
