My Boyfriend Married My Best Friend Chapter 01
On Christmas Day, full of anticipation, I walked into the county clerk's office arm in arm with Theodore Huxley.
But after tapping away for a long time, the clerk frowned and looked at him:
"Mr. Huxley, you have to get a divorce first before you can get married again."
A loud buzz exploded in my head.
Theodore, however, nodded casually as if he had just remembered:
"Oh, right."
"I think I accidentally got married five years ago."
Five years ago.
We had been together for almost ten years.
"Who is it?"
I asked, my voice hoarse.
"Sophie Sutton."
Theodore said absentmindedly.
That was my best friend's name.
She was notoriously free-spirited, not only dating five boyfriends at the same time, but never keeping one for more than a month.
Seeing me trembling, Theodore started a video call.
My best friend's impatient voice came through:
"What's the rush? Isn't it not time for us to meet this month yet?"
Chapter 1
I froze in place.
My fingertips were ice-cold.
Sophie had settled overseas, and I hadn't seen her in person for years.
Theodore tilted the phone to show my face.
Sophie had her arms around two men in the video, probably her new boyfriends.
Seeing me, she waved with a grin:
"Jasminie, what are you doing here",
completely ignoring the very first sentence she had blurted out.
Suppressing my trembling hands, I said calmly:
"We are at the county clerk's office getting our marriage license."
Sophie let out a small gasp.
"Happy wedding, darling!
Congratulations on finally getting your wish!"
"Ugh, I'm so mad, why does that brat Theodore get to be so lucky?"
Sophie kept rambling on the other end of the line, putting Theodore down.
As if I were truly a fine piece of meat thrown to the dogs.
But my ears were ringing, and I couldn't hear a thing.
In my memory, she and Theodore had been like oil and water since childhood, fighting every time they met.
If I hadn't been the buffer between them, they would have beaten each other bloody countless times.
Yet these two people had been legally husband and wife for five years.
Theodore sneered, interrupting Sophie's monologue:
"Miss Sutton, did you forget something?"
Sophie froze.
Theodore continued without a care:
"You forgot to divorce me."
The phone dropped to the floor with a loud crash.
Sophie scrambled to pick it up.
Wearing the exact same expression as Theodore.
"Ah, I think there was something like that. Wait for me to come back tonight!"
With that, she hung up the phone swiftly.
I opened my mouth to stop her, but it was too late.
On the way home, we were both silent.
After closing the door, Theodore reached out to pat my head like he used to.
I dodged, and his hand stopped awkwardly in mid-air.
"Why?"
I looked at him, my fingertips trembling.
He casually withdrew his hand and lit a cigarette.
"It was an accident."
Through the smoke, his expression was blurred.
"About this time five years ago, we drank too much at a party."
"The guys thought it would be fun and egged us on to get married right there."
"But we both forgot all about it after we woke up."
A wave of nausea surged in my stomach.
I leaned against the wall and dry-heaved.
After a long time, I finally wiped my tears.
"Then what was that about it not being time to meet yet?"
Theodore paused, but still answered honestly.
"We meet up regularly every month. Sometimes she comes back, sometimes I go over."
An overwhelming sense of absurdity washed over me.
After Sophie went abroad, I could only see her through video calls.
Yet my boyfriend and my best friend had been meeting regularly behind my back.
"When was the last time?"
Theodore froze for a moment before it registered:
"The seventeenth of last month."
The seventeenth.
Our anniversary.
I took the day off, baked a cake by myself, burned my hand, only to receive a text that he had to work late.
I waited from dawn until dusk.
In the end, I ate all the cold food on the table alone, pretending we had spent the day together.
It turned out that from beginning to end, I was the only clown performing a one-man show on stage.
Large teardrops suddenly began to fall.
Theodore gently wiped them away.
"I didn't mean to hide it from you."
"We actually made up a long time ago, we just didn't know how to tell you."
The loose T-shirt on my body suddenly felt so tight I couldn't breathe.
I pushed him away in a breakdown, smashing everything in the room to pieces.
"Get out, get the hell out!"
"Theodore, you make me sick!"
A shard of glass flew past, grazing his forehead.
Theodore's face darkened.
"Fine, just calm down first."
"There's really nothing going on between Sophie and me. If I liked her, do you think you'd even have a chance?"
"Once she comes back and gets a divorce, we'll get married."
With that, Theodore left without a second glance.
I was left alone in the room, hair disheveled, looking like a madwoman.
I covered my face and began to laugh softly.
I laughed until I was dizzy, tears streaming down like a fountain.
