My Ten Years As His Basement Woman Chapter 01
Aurelia Paxton lay curled on the bed, every inch of her body aching as if it had been torn apart and crudely stitched back together.
Her wrists, waist, and inner thighs were mottled with bruises and dark love bites. In places where skin had chafed, blood oozed out.
Water splashed steadily in the bathroom. Daniel Prescott was showering.
This was how it always went between them.
He would take her with relentless hunger, then withdraw without hesitation once he was satisfied, leaving her alone on the rumpled sheets to steady her breathing.
On the nightstand, Daniel's phone buzzed.
Aurelia hadn't intended to look.
But the screen lit up again and again, WhatsApp notifications stacking one after another. The contact name was painfully intimate—"Gina."
It was short for Georgina Hendrix—heiress to the Hendrix family in Los Angeles and Daniel's childhood sweetheart.
On a strange impulse, Aurelia reached for the phone.
There was no password, and she effortlessly opened the chat.
The newest message was a voice note from Georgina.
"Danny, I tried on my third wedding dress today! Mom thinks it's perfect! You've gotta come help me pick tomorrow, or I'll be mad!
"Oh, by the way, Dad has finalized the guest list for our engagement banquet next month. Do you wanna invite Ms. Paxton? She's technically your... well, booty call, but you've been together for so long. It feels rude not to invite her, doesn't it?"
A cheeky winking emoji followed.
Aurelia's head spun, her blood ran cold, and she instinctively scrolled upward.
Georgina sent a pouting emoji. "Be gentle with her. She always has bruises in the photos. I feel sorry for her."
Daniel: "Gentle? She doesn't deserve that."
"Gina, you two are different. You're my future wife, and I would never hurt you."
"As for Aurelia, she's just a sex toy. All men have needs, and we have to vent somewhere."
...
Aurelia's vision blurred, and the phone slipped from her grasp, landing on the carpet with a dull thud.
Just then, the bathroom door swung open.
Daniel stepped out. His gaze shifted to the phone on the floor, then to Aurelia's pale face, his brows knitting. "What's wrong?"
Aurelia looked up, her ten years of quiet endurance and compromise shattering.
Her voice was hoarse when she spoke, "Daniel, let's break up."
He paused mid-motion—then let out a short scoff, as if he had heard a joke.
He walked to the bedside and bent down, gripping her chin between his fingers. "What's this fuss about? Because I was rough tonight?"
His fingertips felt scorching, his skin still warm from the shower, but Aurelia felt nothing but cold.
So cold she couldn't help shivering.
"I said, let's break up," she repeated, each word deliberate.
"It's been ten years, Daniel.
"I'm tired of being your invisible lover. Tired of hiding from your friends. Tired of being hurt in bed every time and pretending I'm fine."
"So that's what this is about?"
Daniel released his grip, his tone impatient. "Aurelia, you never gave a damn about this before."
Aurelia clutched the sheets, tears pouring from her eyes as she murmured, "That's because I believed you cared about me."
She gazed up at Daniel, her voice thick with hurt. "I thought you had your reasons for keeping me a secret. I thought that someday you would take my hand and tell everyone that I was your girlfriend."
She cried until she trembled as years of pent-up frustration finally erupted. "I asked you countless times to introduce me to your friends, and you always said it was unnecessary.
"I asked for one photo together because we didn't have a single one, and you said you hated taking pictures.
"I begged you to spend one day with me on my birthday this year, and you said you were busy. But the very day, you posted photos from your Maldives trip with Georgina on Instagram.
"Daniel, what do you take me for?"
Daniel listened in silence, his face betraying nothing.
After Aurelia stopped crying, he took a shirt from the wardrobe and put it on slowly. His voice was calm as he said, "I thought we had a tacit understanding.
"From the very first day we were together, you should have known that we come from different worlds. I can give you money and houses, but a name?"
He fastened the last button, turned, and looked at her as if she were an object. "You don't deserve it."
