My Mafia Husband Begged Me Back Chapter 01
After my daughter Kelly died, I erased every habit Everett Curran—my arms-dealer husband—had ever disliked.
I stopped interrogating him about his whereabouts, and I slept just fine when he stayed out all night.
Even after I was injured in an explosion and the onsite medic told me to notify my family, I just replied calmly, "I don't have any."
One of the nurses recognized me. "Mrs. Curran, right? Mr. Curran is right next door. Should I inform him?"
I shook my head, my voice barely above a whisper. "That won't be necessary."
But thirty minutes later, Everett showed up anyway.
His sharp eyes carried their usual oppressive intensity. His voice was deep and cold. "Why didn't you tell me you were injured?"
I lowered my gaze. "Just shrapnel scratches. Nothing serious."
My indifferent tone seemed to irritate him for reasons even he didn't understand.
He was about to speak when the guards' voices drifted in from outside.
"Mr. Curran really cares about Ms. Finley. She only twisted her ankle during training, and he called in a helicopter and carried her on and off himself. He wouldn't even let her feet touch the ground."
Everett visibly panicked. He instinctively glanced at me out of the corner of his eye, like he was waiting for me to question him, to make a scene like I used to.
But I didn't even bat an eye. I simply leaned back against the pillow and closed my eyes to rest.

The air around Everett grew heavy. He explained in a deep voice, "Don't listen to them. Madeline is a specialist in the company. If she's hurt, it affects operations. I'm just doing it for the greater good."
I nodded without a word.
His temper suddenly flared. "You don't believe me?"
"I do," I replied evenly, my tone devoid of emotion. "You personally trained Madeline into key personnel, and you're her superior. It's only natural you look out for her."
His brows knit together, as if my calm response unsettled him more than anger ever could.
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from outside—the sound of equipment clattering to the floor.
Leaning against the wall, Madeline staggered into view and collapsed right in front of my ward.
Everett strode over at once and swept her into his arms. "What are you doing here? Didn't I tell you to stay in bed?"
"I heard Mrs. Curran got hurt." She looked at me, eyes glistening with tears. "I came to check on her."
Then she shrank into Everett's embrace as if I were something to fear. Her voice trembled as she sobbed, "Mrs. Curran, please don't blame me... I never meant for Kelly to die."
In the past, I would have seized Everett by the collar and demanded to know why he was shielding the woman responsible for our daughter's death.
But now, I just stared at the ceiling in silence.
Everett lowered his voice. "I'm taking Madeline back to her ward. I'll be right back."
He turned and carried her away.
It was midnight, and he still hadn't come back.
Instead, I got a call from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. "Ms. Simpson, are you absolutely sure you want to join the Welkin Shield project? This is a classified initiative at the highest level. Once you're in, you'll be stationed at the base for a minimum of twenty years—completely cut off from the outside world. That includes your husband."
"Yes. I'm sure." My voice was utterly flat.
The person on the other end hesitated. "Alright... If you change your mind, you have three days to withdraw your application. After all, you used to care so much about Mr. Curran—"
"I won't regret it," I cut in. "Because I don't love him anymore."
The next second, the door slammed open.
Everett stood there, his gaze icy as he snarled, "You don't love me anymore? I dare you to say that again, Alicia!"
